The Poll Attacks

Keep ranking Louisiana Tech, keeping getting Poll Attacked.

Fine with me.

My will is strong.

Let's do this!

AP poll: Remember last week when Nick Jezierny of The Idaho Statesmen ranked Louisiana Tech 20th and got Poll Attacked because Louisiana Tech, at the time, had a 17-2 record featuring no wins over teams good enough to earn at-large bids to the NCAA tournament and lopsided losses to New Mexico (lost by 29 points) and Arizona (lost by 16 points)? Of course, you remember. But what you might not know is that Louisiana Tech responded with an 87-76 loss to a San Jose State team that was 9-8.  After that, the Bulldogs edged Hawaii 65-60. So now Louisiana Tech is 18-3 with no wins over teams good enough to earn at-large bids to the NCAA tournament and lopsNCAA tournament teams and three embarrassing losses, and would you believe Nick ranked the Bulldogs again?

Swear to God, he ranked them again.

Nick was (and for good reason) the only AP voter ranking Louisiana Tech before the loss to San Jose State. That should've told him something, and I don't think he's stupid. So I'm chalking up Nick's continued support of f Louisiana Tech as an act of defiance, and I don't respond well to acts of defiance.

Drives me crazy.

To put how silly this is into perspective, let me tell you what Nick did with Baylor. Last week, he had Louisiana Tech and Baylor both ranked. Then Louisiana Tech lost by double-digits to San Jose State and beat Hawaii by five points while Baylor nearly upset Kansas at Kansas and smashed UMass 71-45.  So. naturally, Nick kept Louisiana Tech ranked and dropped Baylor off his ballot -- presumably because watching Baylor push Kansas and smash UMass proved the Bears were no longer worthy of being ranked on his ballot while Louisiana Tech's loss at San Jose State and win over Hawaii showed Nick ... honestly ... I have no idea.

Just so we're clear, there's nothing wrong with not ranking Baylor; I don't have the Bears ranked, either. But if I had them ranked last week, I sure as hell would have them ranked this week. And I don't care what week it is, I'd absolutely have them ranked above Louisiana Tech.

Coaches poll: Florida State is 15-4 with two wins over Georgia Tech while Georgia Tech is 14-5 with two losses to Florida State. So you'd think most would take that information and conclude that Florida State needs to be ahead of Georgia Tech, right? Well, not the coaches who vote in the Coaches poll, because they have Georgia Tech 22nd and Florida State unranked.

Unreal.

And Louisiana Tech got three points in the Coaches poll.

So, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go run my head into a wall.

... and what's this ... a recruiting violation by Bill Self regarding... wait for it... John Wall.

Sincerely, I have nothing against Kansas... I actually really like their team this year, but I have no tolerance for aimless objections... if you dislike Kentucky, thats fine... I think you're part of a very large group, maybe just try to be less obvious about it.

Not that it really matters to me, but if John Wall was attending your school, would you be so certain he attended class and wasn't taking money.  Regardless of Calapari's past dealings, John Wall had to select a university to attend for a year, and it looks like he picked the right one.  By the way, after Xavier Henry chose Kansas, why isn't his class attendance isn't an issue for you... you might want to check into Bill Self's dealings at Illinois... but I guess you'll save that investigation for if Kansas ever assumes the top spot again.

Parrish Logic or lack of :

Kansas loses to Tennessee who loses to Georgia who loses to Wofford who loses to Appalachian St who loses to East Tennessee St who loses to Mercer who loses to Stetson who loses to Savannah St . So therefore Savannah St should be rated higher than Kansas RIGHT Gary

coach cal can never win the big game, he cheats, skirts the rules and still chokes, how can a guy have tyreke evans and derrick rose in back-to-back seasons and cant win a title, coach cal is proof that cheaters never prosper, the guy is an overrated coach, im pretty sure that joker phillips could win 25 games with that roster.

The Poll Attacks

See this is whats wrong. The Media picks their favorite at the beginning of the year. If a team outside of the top 25 beats a team thats in it, boom it makes them great. Its a domino effect, but in the end the top 25 is very heavily influenced by biased media meatheads. Who cares. In the end,

A WIN IS A WIN

The Poll Attacks

Gary,

I think there is a minor poll attack for you this week, and it is shared by everyone else in the voting nation.  I understand you having Kentucky #1, and I understand this team is absolutely sick with talent.  However, you spend a lot of time talking about body of work, and their's leaves some to be desired.  Yes they have won every game, and it's not their fault UNC and Uconn have turned out to be weaker this year....however, they are yet to beat a team in your Top 25 (and one), do they really deserve #1.

Kansas is 1-1 against your top 26
Villanova is 2-1
Syracuse is 2-1
Texas is 2-1

now clearly Texas has one more loss outside of your top 26...but as much as Kentucky has Talent...they don't have the body of work yet, and it takes until Feb. 2 for them to meet a team in your top 26.

The Poll Attacks

Actually dukefan704, Wake Forest has 4 good wins: Xavier (RPI of 13), at Gonzaga (RPI of 23 and consensus Top 15 team), at North Carolina, and Virginia. Say what you want about North Carolina having a down year, but they punched the Tar Heels in the teeth on their home court, that's impressive. As well, Virginia was unbeaten in ACC play until they played Wake, which needs to count for something. Ranking Wake doesn't mean a poll is "terrible".

As for his dropping of Duke, it's not that unreasonable when you look at who he moved. The teams that jumped Duke were:

  • Syracuse - 1 loss team, won both games this week
  • Michigan State - won both games this week, plus is undefeated in what is proving to be a tough Big 10 this year
  • Purdue - 3 losses (same as Duke), but doesn't have as bad of a loss as Duke (Northwestern, who he has ranked, vs. NC State) and won both games this week
  • West Virginia - 3 losses, but doesn't have as bad of a loss as Duke (Notre Dame vs. NC State) and won both games this week
  • Georgetown - 3 losses, worst loss is similar (Marquette vs. NC State), but 6-2 in a harder Big East vs. 4-2 in ACC, plus beat Pittsburgh this week - a team that was a consensus top 10 team last week. Duke hasn't beaten a team in the top 10 all year.

Each of these teams has a reasonable argument to be ranked above Duke, so frankly, don't see why this ranking of Duke leads to his poll being "terrible".

Temple is ranked a little high in my opinion, but that ranking alone doesn't push the poll into the "terrible" category.
