The Poll Attacks

President Obama attended the Georgetown-Duke game.
He must've taken Pat Ridgell's seat.
And his TV.
And his internet service.
I'll explain momentarily.
It's time to Poll Attack!
AP poll: Georgetown is 16-4 with wins over four ranked teams while Duke is 17-4 with just one win over a ranked team. When you combine that nugget of information with the fact that two of the Hoyas' four losses are to the teams ranked second (Villanova) and third (Syracuse) nationally, it's simple to see that Georgetown owns the superior body of work.
And then there's this: Georgetown just beat the absolute dog crap out of Duke.
The final score was 89-77.
But it wasn't really as close as that might indicate.
And yet Pat Ridgell from the Daily Times-Call in Colorado somehow came to the conclusion that Duke should be ranked ninth on his ballot -- four spots ahead of No. 13 Georgetown. How could that possibly be defended? He's also got Gonzaga ranked ahead of Georgetown, and that seems even crazier considering the Zags are 17-4 with a loss to San Francisco and a 35-point loss to Duke, i.e., the same team that just lost by 12 to Georgetown .
Truth is, I like all three teams -- Georgetown, Duke and Gonzaga.
I have them all ranked.
But I have them ranked in that order -- No. 8 Georgetown, No. 10 Duke and No. 20 Gonzaga.
If you have those teams in any order besides that order, you've made a mistake.
An obvious and ridiculous mistake.
Coaches poll: So I finally got Louisiana Tech out of the "Others Receiving Votes" part of the AP poll, but the Bulldogs are still getting votes in the Coaches poll, even after Saturday's 91-77 home loss to New Mexico State. It's incredible that somebody continues to rank this team, and what's even more incredible is that Louisiana Tech got three points last week and four points this week, meaning the Bulldogs actually gained a point after a double-digit home loss to a New Mexico State team that entered with a 12-8 record.
My God.
But I'm over Louisiana Tech.
What I want to know is how Connecticut got six points.
What stupid coach is voting for UConn?
The Huskies are 13-8 with one win over a ranked team (Texas) and four losses to unranked teams (Cincinnati, Michigan, Providence and Marquette), and they were on a two-game losing streak entering Monday night's game with Louisville. If you had a Top 35 ballot you'd have a hard time getting Connecticut on it. So I can't figure out how a coach -- i.e., a man with a college degree and some presumed basketball knowledge -- could put UConn on a Top 25 ballot ... unless, of course, it's the same coach who's still voting for Louisiana Tech.
In that case, it makes perfect sense.

The Poll AttacksLooks like Carolina loss again. I think they're in jeopardy of not making the 64 bracket!! Don't get me wrong I love Dicky V. "Baby", but I can only take so much of his North Carolina praising. Wow..when was the last time North Carolina didn't make it to the 64?

The Poll AttacksI hate Duke like all good people should, but understand why they get the love they do. One must realize that the current crop of sportswriters lived through two Duke events that forever changed their perspectives on the Blue Devils.
1.) (sorry Kentucky fans) Christian Laettner's shot2.) Beating the undefeated Runnin' Rebs for a National Championship For anyone who's followed college hoops for the past 20 years or so these two games are as huge as it ever got. I watched Ray Allen beat Georgetown in the Big East Championship. I cringed as James Forrest made an impossible shot against Harold Miner's Trojans (killed my bracket). I've seen so many great college games I could talk for hours. But, none of these games stirs up the emotions of those two Duke victories. Duke is the Yankees of college hoops. You love them or you hate them. There is no middle ground. If you love them you look past their recent struggles, and the fact that other programs have richer histories. If you hate them you take great joy in every defeat, but still find yourself waiting for that one last run. Either way you view them as more than their collective parts, or resume, because you can't get past what you've seen them do on the biggest of stages. |

The Poll AttacksIt puzzles me that Kentucky loses ONE game and drops 2 spots.Duke on the other hand has FOUR losses and is still ranked in the top 10.
I have never understood what makes the voters think Duke has such a great history.3 national championships doesn't even compare with some of the all time great programs. |

The Poll AttacksYou must have seen another game, Georgetown was winning 89-70 with 59 seconds left in the game. A meaningless 3 and a couple of steals in those 59 seconds put Duke at 77 well after the game was already won by Georgetown!
"And by the way GARY 2 different views u really cut down Duke I must have saw another game hmmm didnt the BLUE DEVILS out score GEORGETOWN in 2nd HALF yes the 10 point spurt at first ditated the rest of game playn catch up nvr could and also about UNC didnt they go to the FINAL FOUR WITH 13 or 15 losses ONE YEAR??" |

The Poll AttacksIts pretty ridiculous how Duke is always ranked so high. Yes, I understand Coach K is a great coach and they do get top players in their program. Yet this program has not been very relevant for the past 5 years. They have consistently underperformed in the tournament given their seed. I feel like they have always deserved a lower seed than they got. I have heard people say how they have underperformed (like I just did). They have underperformed based upon the seed they received, not based upon how good of a team they were. They were not as good of a team as their seed would have indicated.

Mfaoya Clearly knows what he is talking aboutI mean com'on. After Gtown took a 23 point lead with 4 minutes to go, Duke outscored them by 11 the rest of the way. That clearly shows that Duke is a much better team when Gtown stops taking shots and just waits for the clock to expire. Oh wait...... I guess looking at the box score and seeing that Duke outscored them in the second half is dumb when you consider they were down by 23 at the 4 minute mark. Way to make a good argument Mfaoya. Did you go to Duke?
