Dear Gary (on WVU fans)

Here's Friday's Dear Gary ...

Dear Gary: I'm a lifetime fan of both WVU football and basketball. There are no words that we Mountaineer fans can say to offset the disrespect (some fans are showing to) oppossing teams, staff and trainers. Mountaineer fans do not accept this this type of behavor as the norm. Bodily harm nor verbal attacts should be accepted. Cursing in a public forum should not be tolereated. Men, women and children are present at our venues and this has to be stopped. It's embarrasing to us all. We all share a dislike for Pitt, but there's a difference between passion for your team and down right stupidity.

-- Robert

This email should serve as a good reminder that though the West Virginia fans are getting blasted for the way they've behaved, the majority of West Virginia fans are just as bothered by recent developments as the rest of the country. Sure, some of the WVU fans are idiots; that's clear. But most are not, and Robert -- a lifetime WVU fan -- seems to be in the not-an-idiot group. There are thousands more like him. That's important to remember.

Hey I'm not saying that it doesn't happen everywhere.  But again this isn't the first time things have gotten this bad.  Our student section chanted "tea bag paulus" during a Duke game and we looked classless.  End of the day though either do something about or don't but don't act like its an isolated incident.  I'm tired of all the administrations saying text if you see something and call this hotline to report bad behavior.  That's not taking it seriously.  It's all CYA and you and I both know it.

How many times doe we have to see behavior repeat itself before we actually say that its not just a limited few!!!!!! You don't have to see it all any more since you picked up your ball and refused to play WVU anymore.  Let me tell you anotherthing you self righteous piece of poop, I've been to many games at Hokie High and the fans are just as disrespectful.  I was with my wife and child driving to the stadium and had my WV car banner torn off, beer spilled on me in the stadium (how it got there I don't know since they don't sell it there), and had profanity screamed at us so bad that we had to have an usher find new seats for us because they wouldn't remove the Hokie fans who were shouting because they thought that it was acceptable.  So come off your high horse and quit acting like this doesn't happen where you're from.  True fans of the games are there to enjoy the atmosphere, if we didn't enjoy it, we could watch it on TV.  It is unfortunate that some people go aver the lines and act like it is more about them, but it happens.  The next time you see something unsafe or morally wrong, report it.  If you don't, you are just as wrong as them.

It's also important to remember these are the same fans that threw a garbage can at a visiting football team (albeit "The U") as they went in to the locker room at halftime.  Whose fans have been accused of throwing golf balls, batteries, etc from the stands during football games.  Who have been accused numerous times of yelling racist comments at visiting football players on the sidelines.  That was football which has dominated the campus for decades.  Now that the basketball team is good the same disrespect and behavior is spilling over into the arena.  Why are you acting suprised?  REALLY!!  Acting like the fans here have been model citizens and that the majority aren't on board with this type of behavior is laughable.  If they really wanted to fix it they would have fixed it years ago after a coach got knocked out by a trash can.  Or after they moved the student section numerous times to try to stop foreign objects being thrown at the visiting sidelines.  How many times doe we have to see behavior repeat itself before we actually say that its not just a limited few!!!!!!  And if it hasn't stopped in ten+ plus years why do you think it will now.  Oh,I know because the president said please text if you see someone misbehaving.  Got it!!
