Josh Pastner announced Monday that Pierre Henderson-Niles is no longer a Memphis Tiger.

"As I told the team, I have a soft spot for Pierre, and I really want to see him do well," Pastner said. "He's a fine young man, and I am proud of how hard he worked to get in shape to play this season and also how hard he worked in the classroom so that he can graduate in May. Moving forward, we will do all we can for Pierre as he finishes up the academic work toward completing his degree. We wish Pierre nothing but the best."

A source told that Henderson-Niles' often poor attitude is the root of the problem, but the source still described this development as a "mutual decision." The source insisted there was no off-the-court incident that triggered things.

This leaves Memphis with just one true post player (Will Coleman) for the rest of the season.

The Tigers play UCF on Wednesday night.

Henderson-Niles no longer on Memphis team

A guy who quits on his team, regardless of his abilities, is going to have a hard time anywhere, and especially so in a town like Memphis. Memphians would still rather watch a guy play his heart out even when he sucks than watch some talented diva mope and pout his way through a game.

This town has ALWAYS been about heart and attitude first, no matter what the ability of the player, and PHN did himself a disservice by not showing those traits to Coach Pastner and the fans. I hesitate to say good riddance; kids make bad emotional decisions all the time; but if this attitude is what he would have carried with him into the post season, then Memphis really is better off without him.

I just think it's a shame he couldn't suck it up and contribute to the best of his abilities to the school that embraced him, housed him, and gave him a free education,  these last 4 years.

More Valuable Than We'd Ever Thought

pierre needs to come back.  he doesn't realize how valuable he really is to memphis.  we only have 2 bigmen counting him.

so what if u don't get to play as many minutes as u think u should, it's a team sport, you're a senior, and you'll never get a chance to do it again.

The fact still remains, he quit on his team.

Y'know, I thought when I started seeing him lose that silly grin he always got(on the occaision he did something right) that he was finally begining to take this basketball thing seriously. It seems now that he just doesn't care anymore. This wouldn't be a big deal at all in a normal year. He's a horrible basketball player. But atleast he could give you some rebounds, play decent D and give you five fouls on a shallow team like this one.

Well, Angel and DJ gotta step up now.

Pierre is a good kid who worked really hard to lose weight and really wanted to come back and play like he did in high school.  He just can't anymore.  The 3 years he lost, where time developing he'll never get back and he couldn't play the way he wanted.
My opinion is that Pierre quit liking basketball and really was just playing out the string so to speak.  His body language was bad, not his attitude.  He was just not enjoying himself and was miserable.  Josh basically let him leave the team early.  I don't think he was bad or was a problem in the locker room, but I do think he was upset that he couldn't play more.
That's really it.  His pride was too big to allow him to no play, but his skills didn't justify it.  He knew this and decided that he couldn't help the team.

Henderson-Niles no longer on Memphis team

There is only one person to blame all the L's on and the trouble on the team!  John (Judas Priest) Cal!!!!!!!!!
I don't respect Calipari one bit for leaving a team who he nurtured into a bigtime national power, then left the Tigers...COLD-HEARTED! He was one of my favorite coaches along with Pearl, Izzo, Patino, & Few, but this year I think he is a big chump. This all coming from a devout Gonzaga fan...Cal's teams beating us 4 in a row & all...I don't care...I enjoyed the competition, win or lose. I was thinking that Memphis woulda' had another 'W' against the Zags if he wouldn't have left the team in control of his assistant.

So, here's hoping that the Tigers enter the Big Dance under an achieving Josh Pastner & do well...AND the Wildcats eat doo-doo maybe after one game in the Big Tourney...would love to see the Zags kick their butts...better yet, the Tigers kick their butts, heh heh.

I just never quite cottoned to college players who leave for the NBA before graduating...but a coach of a winning program leaving to coach elsewhere..............INEXCUSABLE! That's just my two cents worth...l

Yoy have got to be kidding me!  I work a 12 hour shift, shovel 6inches of snow off my driveway, sit to relax with a little Tiger news and I read this!  You have got to be kidding!
Pierre, what were you thinking!  We showed you the love.  We supported you while you lived in Cal's doghouse.  If this was because of an attitude problem then good riddance.  We saw how attitude damaged a team a few years ago....remember Sean Banks.
We had a uphill battle before, but now we are really going to have to fight.
I love my Tigers and I still think we can win CUSA.  Come on guys, we love you.  Keep fighting.  We are not going to desert you!

Henderson-Niles no longer on Memphis team

Memphis kept Henderson-Niles in the starting lineup in an attempt to keep him motivated, but his playing time had dipped to an average of 14 minutes in the Tigers’ last four games. Junior forward Will Coleman played most of the second half last Saturday against Gonzaga. According to a source, Henderson-Niles refused to get off the bench and participate in a team huddle during a timeout late in the game.

I've always liked PHN and hoped one day we'd see the fulfillment of all that potential he exhibited when he dominated in high school.  Unfortunately, he's never quite lived up to the potential.

There's no doubt he has had attitude problems.  The most obvious thing to me was his refusal to join a team huddle toward the end of the Gonzaga game.  While the rest of the team was trying to find a way to win a close game, PHN and Sallie sulked on the bench.  Obviously i don't know what happened between them and Pastner, but you could tell from their body language and facial expressions that they weren't happy.

Anyway, i guess that's all in the past.  I just hope Pierre has enough sense to stay in school and get his degree so that he can have a life after basketball.

Calling Pierre a vagina is an insult to vaginas.  The going gets tough and the weak retreat.  There is a reason a guy with a prototypical NFL tight end's body isn't playing football.  He has zero intestinal fortitude.
