Dear Gary (on why polls aren't done twice a week)

Here's Wednesday's Dear Gary ...

Dear Gary: Since college basketball teams play twice each week, why are the polls only updated once a week? The polls are almost always outdated by wednesday. Why not do polls Mondays and Thursdays?

-- Barry

Because people have lives would be the simple answer. Plus, voters can't even rank teams intelligently once a week, so there's no way most would be able to do it twice a week. Take Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News , for instance. He has Illinois ranked 12th despite the fact that no other AP voter even put the Illini on a ballot.

Illinois is 18-10 overall and 4-6 against schools Jerry Palm projects to make the NCAA tournament with four additional losses to teams that won't make it (Utah, Bradley, Georgia and Northwestern). Meantime, Georgetown is 19-7 overall and 7-5 against schools Palm projects to make the NCAA tournament with just two additional losses to teams that won't make it (South Florida and Rutgers).

And yet somehow Wilner has Illinois 12th and Georgetown 20th.

And you want people to vote twice a week?

Dear Gary (on why polls aren't done twice a week)

You do realize 40 teams outside the Top 25 make it to the tournament every year, correct? My point here was you can be a decent team, even a fairly good team, and NOT be ranked in the Top 25 (or even worthy of such).  Illinois is a decent NCAA tournament worthy team, nothing more (and definitely not the 12th best team in the land).

Yes, Illinois is in the tournament right now.

That's not the point.

The point was that though Illinois appears to be a NCAA tournament team (at this moment), there's no way to justify ranking the Illini 12th (or eights spots ahead of Georgetown). There are no hidden meanings in my writing. I usually write exactly what I think, for better or worse. So don't imagine that I think the Illini are "scrubs" unless I call them scrubs. Just take it for what it is, which is me suggesting they shouldn't be ranked 12th (or eight spots ahead of Georgetown) on anybody's ballot.

But don't think for a second that the Fighting Illini deserve to be ranked in the top 25.

Thank you Buckhead for trying to control my mind, but rest assured I do not share that sentiment.

And I know Gary was using the Illini because of some hack putting them 12th.

I just wanted to get his thoughts on us dancing and possible seed.

I will say this, other than the Ohio State game 2 weeks, we've never been blown out.  We always play to competition no matter how good or bad (frustratingly) the team is.  So matchups pending, I think we have he chance to be a second weekend tourney team.  I'm speaking talent evaluation here, save the anyone can win at anytime cliche.

Well since you decided to use this question to criticize my Illini Gary, can you at least tell me if you think they deserve to be in the tournament.

I don't know that he was criticizing Illinois, he was criticizing that dude for ranking them 12th. Which they clearly do not deserve. Yes they beat Vandy, and Mich St. And yes they beat my Badgers at the Kohl Center, which even I can say was a great win for them, very tough to win there. But don't think for a second that the Fighting Illini deserve to be ranked in the top 25.

I feel that with their resume though (as long as they don't lay an egg the rest of the year), they should be in the Big Dance. Maybe as a 10 or 11 seed, but they should be in.

I mean you make them sound like scrubs.  They have good wins @Clemson, Vandy, Michigan State, @Wisconsin, and went to OT with Gonzaga.  And 3 of the 4 bad losses were early in the season.  They have played well since conference play.
No, he made them sound like scrubs compared to Georgetown, which they are.  You do realize 40 teams outside the Top 25 make it to the tournament every year, correct?
