A MRI will determine Purdue's Final Four odds

Forget the RPI.

At the moment, it's not important to Purdue.

The three letters that matter most now are MRI -- as in the MRI that's expected to be conducted on Robbie Hummel's right knee Thursday, as in the MRI that'll likely have more to do with whether the Boilermakers make the Final Four than the seed or draw the NCAA tournament selection committee deals them.

Yes, this is that big.

Hummel is not a National Player of the Year candidate, nor is he Purdue's leading scorer. But he's a crucial part to what the Boilermakers do, and everything changed when he crumbled to the floor with a knee injury in the first half of Wednesday's win at Minnesota. How bad is the injury? There's still no official word. But it's worth noting that nobody connected to Purdue is suggesting it might be OK. In other words, everybody is holding out hope, but nobody seems hopeful, and that's probably not a good sign. At least it's not usually a good sign.

Either way, this is awful.

Hummel was averaging 15.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, and he had Purdue in position to win the Big Ten, earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, and perhaps advance to the Final Four. All those things are still possible, of course. But the odds of any of them happening will decrease drastically if Hummel's MRI doesn't produce good results.

So again, forget the RPI.

The MRI is all that matters now.

Badgers in Indy?

I can comfortably say that I really doubt the Badgers will even sniff the sweet 16.  They had a couple weeks where they got hot, but I doubt that will happen again, Leuer or not.  For that matter, I think the Big Ten has solid depth but I dont see any of the teams making the Final Four.  Especially Wisconsin, who chokes in the dance every year Bo has been there.

LUJEN1424 -- What a tool.  Wisconsin is tough -- I have no doubt they will be in the Sweet Sixteen -- with a decent shot of going further if they get a good matchup.  Let's see if Syracuse can avoid yet another early exit to another Vermont in '06 (13 over 4) or Texas A&M  '05 (12 over 5). Football season is only 5 months away... Guess *you* better live it up now, then -- wasn't Syracuse last in the Big East?

It's pretty obvious this Badger fan is mad that Hummel and co. has beaten them 5 out of 6 meetings.  It's too bad because I'm disappointed every time I see a player go down.  That goes for Leuer too.

Personally, if he is out for any extended period of time (i.e. rest of season and Big Ten tournament), I think the Boilers are done. Hummell will be rusty and they will be upset first weekend of the Big Dance. Not a very good team anyways, Wisconsin is a much better version of what they do, creamed them at home and lost by one possession on the road without Leuer and a blatant foul on the last play not called). Just wait til we get Leuer back in the flow of things. Do not be surprised to see us in Indianapolis come April!

sounds like some really sour grapes from the fan of a team that's been right on the edge all year but just not able to get over the top..

how come when harangody went down it didn't get this much media attention. im sorry but even though they beat pitt today stats show gody means more to his team

because ND is a mediocre team & Purdue is ranked #3.  If you are the most important player on the 3rd ranked team, you are more valuable than the most important player on the 40th ranked team

Stats may show this, and I agree he probably is since he is the one true star on Notre Dame. However, Hummel is important in so many ways that don't show up in the books it makes him look worse. His ability to score stretches the d, he moves well, rebounds, hustles, shoots 90% from the charity stripe. You can't replace either Gody or Hummel, but both are just as important.

Yea you're right- Purdue at 24-3, and 3rd ranked in the country, is not very good.  Wisconsin is so much better with 7 losses.  And that beating Purdue took at Wisconsin (lost by 7 pts) proves it.

Never mind that Purdue has a tougher SOS, better RPI, better record and higher ranking than the Badgers... the Badgers are so much better than Purdue that they are going to the final four.  You heard it here first.  Dream on Homer!
