A MRI will determine Purdue's Final Four odds

Forget the RPI.

At the moment, it's not important to Purdue.

The three letters that matter most now are MRI -- as in the MRI that's expected to be conducted on Robbie Hummel's right knee Thursday, as in the MRI that'll likely have more to do with whether the Boilermakers make the Final Four than the seed or draw the NCAA tournament selection committee deals them.

Yes, this is that big.

Hummel is not a National Player of the Year candidate, nor is he Purdue's leading scorer. But he's a crucial part to what the Boilermakers do, and everything changed when he crumbled to the floor with a knee injury in the first half of Wednesday's win at Minnesota. How bad is the injury? There's still no official word. But it's worth noting that nobody connected to Purdue is suggesting it might be OK. In other words, everybody is holding out hope, but nobody seems hopeful, and that's probably not a good sign. At least it's not usually a good sign.

Either way, this is awful.

Hummel was averaging 15.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, and he had Purdue in position to win the Big Ten, earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, and perhaps advance to the Final Four. All those things are still possible, of course. But the odds of any of them happening will decrease drastically if Hummel's MRI doesn't produce good results.

So again, forget the RPI.

The MRI is all that matters now.

Tough break for sure for the Boilers, hope Robbie gets better sooner rather than later.  We just went through a tough stretch with Kalin and his ankle injury hopefully Hummel isn't out for longer than a few games like Kalin was.

Most BigTen fans have given kind words of support for Robbie but you seem to be enjoying it. Sad!

You may also want to stop crying about the game you lost already! You may also want to look at the fact that Purdue beat the Gophers without Hummel and your Badgers with Leuer was spanked just a few days ago.
You seem like a bitter fan hating on the current BigTen Champions. Hope to see you in the BTT even without Hummel.
Defense wins big games!

Personally, if he is out for any extended period of time (i.e. rest of season and Big Ten tournament), I think the Boilers are done. Hummell will be rusty and they will be upset first weekend of the Big Dance. Not a very good team anyways, Wisconsin is a much better version of what they do, creamed them at home and lost by one possession on the road without Leuer and a blatant foul on the last play not called). Just wait til we get Leuer back in the flow of things. Do not be surprised to see us in Indianapolis come April!

Very tough break for the Boilers. He's definitely the one guy that can't live without. Here's hoping he doesn't have torn ligaments. I think they can make it to the end of the BigTen season without Robbie, but they gotta have him in the Big Dance, no question about it.
