Here's Thursday's Dear Gary ...

Dear Gary: Who is your Coach of the Year right now?

-- Mitchell

A few months ago I wrote that Northwestern's Bill Carmody was the leader, which should serve as a reminder that trying to predict these things this early (and, yes, it's still kind of early for COY) is mostly wasted time. I'll explain my thinking as it relates to the Coach of the Year award in an upcoming column, I promise. But for now, I'll limit my thoughts and just show the list of 30 candidates I submitted this morning for the Naismith Coach of the Year award.

Here you go ...

(Names are in alphabetical order)
  1. Steve Alford (New Mexico)
  2. Mike Anderson (Missouri)
  3. Tony Barbee (UTEP)
  4. Jim Boeheim (Syracuse)
  5. John Calipari (Kentucky)
  6. Mike Davis (UAB)

Dear Gary (on National Coach of the Year)

I dont follow UAB basketball at all but I do remember Mike Davis at Indiana and I find it hard to imagine his name should be mentioned in the same article for COY.  Decent recruiter but not a very good in game coach.

I agree that Pitt, Syracuse, Wis have all achieved way beyond everyones expectations.  The offseason COY would have to go to Cal at UK.  He definetly purchased, I mean recruited the best players. lol.

Jamie Dixon of Pitt should be the front-runner. Losing 4 starters (2 to the NBA), being picked 9th in the preseason coaches poll and he has Pitt in the top half of the Big East.  Consider this,  of his starting five, only Brad Wanamaker had every started a game before! And he does this year in and year out without getting the top talent.

I think the front-runners have to be Calipari, Dixon, Boeheim, who all have drastically different's teams from the previous year and have excelled. I'd go with Dixon, personally, because he's working with a less talent that the other two.

Also particularly impressive have been Bo Ryan, Buzz Williams and Chris Mack who have all greatly exceeded expectations after a lot of changeover.
