The Poll Attacks

First things first: I knew Syracuse would be No. 1 in the AP and Coaches polls.

And guess what?

It's not stupid to have Syracuse No. 1.

It's a perfectly reasonable thing to do. I don't agree. But it's not irrational even though Kansas has just as many wins over fellow Top 25 teams and a better RPI, even though KU's two losses came on the road while Syracuse's came at home, even though Jerry Palm still has KU as the No. 1 overall seed. I could use most of that information -- and perhaps all of that information -- to try to convince you that it's stupid to rank Syracuse No. 1. But I'm not going to do that because that's never been the point. I don't think you're stupid if you think Syracuse should be No. 1; I think you're stupid if you think a good case can't also be made for Kansas.

But I'm over it.

I'm more worried about the coach voting Duke No. 1.

That guy is an idiot.

He's about to get Poll Attacked!

AP poll: If Syracuse fans think I'm stupid for having the Orange at No. 2, then I bet they think Tom Keegan is brain-dead. Keegan has the Orange third on his ballot behind Kansas and Kentucky. And did I mention Tom works for the newspaper in Lawrence, Kansas? Yep, the sports editor in Kansas ranked KU No. 1 and Syracuse No. 3. So please click this link and direct your hatred toward him, and forget about me. Thanks.

Coaches poll: It's OK to have Duke in the top four, projected as a No. 1 seed, whatever. All reasonable. But there is no way to reasonably put Duke ahead of both Kansas and Syracuse on a ballot like one coach did this week. Duke has a 25-4 record featuring a loss to North Carolina State. Meantime, Syracuse has a 27-2 record featuring no losses to non-NCAA tournament teams, and Kansas has a 27-2 record featuring no losses to non-NCAA tournament teams. So Syracuse and Kansas both have more wins than Duke, fewer losses than Duke, better wins than Duke, fewer questionable losses than Duke, and I could go on for days.

So who's the guilty coach?

No way of knowing.

Coaches ballots are private.

I can't see them.

But my guess is that the guy who voted Duke No. 1 is the same guy who voted Murray State No. 25 after a loss to Morehead State. Murray State is a great OVC team, but that doesn't translate to a Top 25 team, not when the Racers have four losses to unranked teams and just one win over a team ranked in the top 100 of the RPI.

Syracuse fans, quit living in the past.  Jim Boeheim is the only person still with either program from 2003 and KU has won a title since 2003, we're over it and it's time for you to move on too.

Kansas was dominated by an unranked team.  Why wouldn't you expect them to drop?  Meanwhile, Syracuse dominated a team that is a legitimate Top 10 team.

Syracuse's has 4 wins over Top 11 RPI teams (West Virginia, Villanova, Georgetown and Georgetown) two of which were on the road (at Georgetown and at West Virginia).  KU has just 1-Kansas State.

Syracuse has the exact same record as Kansas, but against a better SOS (9 vs. 19).

Not much debate, really.

OK Gary, I used to be a hater, but I totally dig how you threw your colleague under the bus to draw attention away from your misguided belief that Syracuse is not the number one team.  Bravo!  It is a true slimebag move that I, for one, appreciate.  All I'll say is 2003.  Remember what Carmelo and the boys did to the Big Twelve back then?  When they mesmerized the cream of the Big Twelve with the 2-3 zone and Melo's funky cornrows?  I realize that your hatred of SU stems from the thrashing back in 2003.  So I don't hate you anymore Gary Parrish; I pity you and pray for your meager, vengeful soul.

I must admit I was pretty shocked when I read Kansas was ranked ahead of Syracuse. The whole body of work bs makes no sense at all. Both teams have 2 losses and 27 wins. Both teams are RPI top 3 with strength of schedule, non-conference and in-conferenace rank in the top 5. They have 4 common opponents Memphis, Oakland, Cornell, and California. Both teams basically kicked the crap out of each with the exception Kansas almost falling to Cornell AT Kansas. But seriously poll rankings don't mean shit right now. Both Kansas and Syracuse will be #1 seeds and both are the best teams in their conference. The big difference in rankings is that Kansas started the season #1 and Cuse started unranked. I hope the NCAA selection committee isn't stupid enough to put Kansas and Syracuse on the same side. We could be looking at a 2003 rematch!!

I told you, it's a no-brainer -- Boeheim knows the polls are BS, scorns them for what they are, and could care less if his team is voted for -- he is a friend of Mike and I can hear him chuckling over his pick and all the dimwits saying, WHA?!?!?!

So, for the record Gary, not ONLY did you not pick Cuse number 1 despite a clear case for it, but you ALSO called Boeheim an idiot!!

I love this crap!

Heh, Gary you definitely do your work, and your write interesting material. Unfortunately you just dug a hole this time and these users pounced. After reading your articles all year it seems you are slightly Anti-Syracuse. At least your not as bad as that Pro-ACC nut case Dicky V. And I thank you muchly for not being that much of a tard.

Funny your friend Goodman whb wrote the same article as you edited out I am sitting here at Buffalo Wild wings in Knoxville
with my good friend Gary Parish.
Did you copy off each other like grade school kids and giggle like school girls too!
Or did you play dare & doubledare you, to write that.
Bobby Knight had it right when told Syracuse did not have any top 100 kids" yea rated by the short fat guys"
think he was thinking about Parish and Goodman?

The Poll Attacks

Please state that your an idiot before posting.  I mean, of all the things to get fired up about, Purdue is not one of them.  Yes they lost a game at home and Hummel is out for the year, but their body of work is that of a number 4 team.  Road wins at MSU and OSU, wins vs WV, Wisconson, Tennesee, and Wake Forest and only 1 marginally bad loss.  While I don't disagree with you about #4 being a little too high. your post deserves the attack.

I'll go along with just about everything that has been said, but come on 'Cuse fans.  You're throwing your wins over UNC and Florida in as a reason to have 'Cuse as #1?  Florida is a bubble team.  UNC has sucked all year, it just took the writers time to realize it beacuse of the Carolina blue uniforms.  Also, I know you are bringing it up beacuse it helps your argument, but if Syracuse is so incredible and can't lose on the road, what excuse is there for losing at home?  What excuse is there for losing to Le Moyne?  Syracuse is a really good team, but there is a reason why KU still has the #1 RPI, which is why if Kansas wins out they will have the #1 overall seed in the tournament.

you are comparing apples to syracuse oranges.  parrish's comments have one glaring mistake (missing the 2 GT wins) and several omissions that would call into fair dispute, if not, completely belie his points.  top 50 RPI comparison not good enough for you?  ok, compare top 100 RPI teams?  top 100 not good enough?  look at same opponents.  parrish looks at 3 metrics on saturday afternoon and then sends in his copy to his editor so he can knock off work early and head to the bars.  also, a road win is a road win.  both teams are very good...cuse is just better.  as for neutral courts, i think we can both agree that syracuse does very well on neutral courts in kansas...if you know what i mean (wink).
