Izzo suspends Allen for Big Ten opener

Posted on: March 9, 2010 12:33 pm

Michigan State's Chris Allen has been suspended for at least the Big Ten tournament opener because of a violation of team rules, Tom Izzo said Tuesday. It's unclear if the suspension will last more than one game.

"Chris Allen is not going to be playing in the game Friday,” Izzo told reporters, according to the Detroit Free Press. “Somebody’s got to grow up, and it’s taking a little longer for ome to grow up. There’s some guys that don’t understand that your team is the most valuable thing you have. He’s not demonstrating that to me or my staff.”

Allen is averaging 9.1 points per game for the Spartans.

Izzo suspends Allen for Big Ten opener

It is what it is.  There is no room on an Izzo team for a slacker.  Izzo benched Lucas earlier in the year to motivate him as the team leader which worked fine until he screwed up his ankle.  This happens every year. Paul Davis, Sutton were past examples of Izzo's Ire.  Now it is Chris Allen that needs the wake up call.

One thing that Allen needs to understand.   In just one week it is one loss and you are done.  If he doesn't wake up and contribute as a whole player, mentally, spiritually and responsibily as an adult then he will be on the bench the rest of his career at MSU.   The talent coming in next year will put him out of a starting job period if he doen't step up now and be the man Izzo expected him to be when he recruited him.  It is that simple.  At times early this year he showed signs of brilliance but he became lazy and was settling for 3 point attempts.  In the last Purdue game he did not show up offensively.  In the rest of the games left in this season he must show up in every way but mostly as a dependable leader.

Watch for the whole team to step up.  The sand bagging is over.  Izzo has masterfully orchestrated another Co-Big Ten Championship.  Possibly one of his best coaching jobsto date as he managed to outscore, out rebound and out turnover the entire Big Ten and overcome a key injury to Lucas.  The benching of Allen is simply an Izzo Motivational Move 101.  The Wake Up Call for 2010.  It is time to play ball gentlemen.  Goran Sutton got the message last March.   This year watch and see who steps up and carries this team.  I believe his name is Raymar.  But do not count out Mr Green, and somewhere before this is over Mr. Allen will hit a key lay up or a three point barrage and push this team back to the elite eight with the final four in ther sights. If they do that for the team then the table will be set for Kalin to take them back to the promised land, the Final Four...

Go State!!!

Krivo25...I wouldn't really say it is out of nowhere. Nobody knows what goes on off the court except the people around them. Chris Allen lives in the same apartment with both Lucas and Summers so there is something going on with those 3 that has a carry over effect to each other. His play on the court on defense and shooting have improved substantially this season so we need him back. Hopefully it will get straightened out over the next couple days and he can play in Saturday's game if we get by the Minnesota/Penn St. winner.

Ridiculously ignorant comment.  The article provides no information on what the suspention is for.  And MSU athletics have represented the state excellently.

Problems with individuals existed in the football program, they were immediately and publicly disciplined.

"Problems" in the basketball program are just a coach expecting lots from his players on and off the court and holding his players accountable.  There is nothing that needs cleaning up here.
Nobody is perfect, and problems may occur, how you deal with it is what keeps a program clean.  Suspending kids for attitude or grades or attendance is more than most programs will do, but its not an indication that something needs cleaning up.
The MSU basketball program is as clean and exempliary as it comes.  You should hope your school can achieve at that level of competative excellence and maintain Izzo's record of growing boys into mature and responsible men AND graduating them.

Krivo, that was my take on it.  I would have guessed Lucas or Summers first, but like we say in East Lansing, In Tom We Trust.

The Lansing State Journal is reporting that it's not a university thing, it's a team thing, meaning he may have skipped class or whatever - as in Izzo can bring him back whenever he wants.  I'm not too concerned about it.  He'll be back for the NCAAs, I'm sure.  Izzo seems to like Allen this year, I'm sure it was just a "get your act together" kind of thing.

Wtf are you talking about? If you're saying they need to recruit better character people because of this incident you're wrong, because as someone already said he is suspended due to academic issues, not something to do with his "character." Yes, the football and hockey teams had some issues, but the coaches have taken action and suspended and kicked out the appropriate people. Regardless, don't talk about character and cleaning up an athletic program when you're a Michigan fan. That's just funny, considering the crap that goes on over in Ann Arbor. Now go make me a grilled cheese.

State needs to clean up their entire Athletic program, from football to hockey to basketball.
Maybe they just need to recruit better character people.  MSU is a state-supported school
and they have a responsibility to represent the state well.
