Auburn hires UTEP's Barbee

Posted on: March 24, 2010 9:15 pm

UTEP coach Tony Barbee has accepted an offer to become Auburn's next coach, CBSSports.com has confirmed.

An official announcement is expected Thursday.

Barbee spent four years at UTEP and led the Miners to a Conference USA title and NCAA tournament berth this season. He was an assistant under John Calipari at Memphis before accepting the UTEP job. Some obvious candidates to replace Barbee at UTEP are Sam Houston State's Bob Marlin, former USC coach Tim Floyd and former Kentucky and UTEP coach Billy Gillispie.

That's odd considering Kentucky made an offer to Joe Jackson.

You forgot to mention Will Barton.

When did these guys sign with Kentucky? What are they waiting for?? Scared of the competition if certain freshmen stay for another year???

Good luck Tony Barbee... You are definitely going to need it going to ANY school in Alabama where football is King! Maybe, if he does well enough, he can go to a Big East powerhouse in a few years. If he fails, East Carolina will hire him!

When did Knight Jones and Leslie commit?
Cal would've given his left nut for Barton or Kendrick.

Cal's leftovers look more like Joe Jackson and Tarik Black.

Considering they were backup plans to Knight, Jones, and Leslie.

So yeah, wouldn't be too bad to take 'Cal's Leftovers'

Regardless of what you have to say to make yourself feel better he was still an assistant under Cal.  Right.  So get over yourself.

For all those Auburn fans that are celebrating..... There is no question Barbie is a heck of a recruiter, but he is an average coach.  His average coaching ability has been exposed by more experience and more talented coaches.  He got by with the incredible talent he recruited, but I just don't see him having great success at Auburn playing in the SEC with some top level coaches.  Even Billy Gillespie learned this in his stint at Kentucky.

Sometimes a fat ego will cash checks your talent can not cash.
