Lavin agrees to coach St. John's

Steve Lavin, as expected, has agreed to be the next basketball coach at St. John's, a school official confirmed to CBSSports.com on Tuesday.

An official announcement is expected later Tuesday.

Lavin coached at UCLA from 1996 to 2003 and made five Sweet 16s. The California native has been an analyst at ESPN for the past six years. He replaces Norm Roberts, who was fired earlier this month after six seasons that featured zero NCAA tournament appearances.

It'll be interesting to see what Lavin does with his staff considering he has no east coast experience. A source told CBSSports.com Lavin will likely try to hire Manhattan coach Barry "Slice" Rohrssen to be his top assistant. Lavin could also target Arizona assistant Emanuel "Book" Richardson, a Queens native who used to be the director of basketball for the New York Gauchos summer program that produces high-major talent each year.

Lavin agrees to coach St. John's

Lavin is a difference maker for St. John's.  As long as he get someone local to be his assistant the Red Storm will be back on top.  Lavin was under duress here at UCLA.  Based on what's happened here in Westwood I'm sure the UCLA fans wished they never let him go.  Lavin is like Riley, who took over the Knicks and brough them back to life.  Lavin and Riley are West Coast dudes that can hang in the Big Apple.

Why does he suck gmoney? His record speaks for itself. Only had one bad year at UCLA. He was in the pressure cooker from the beginning at UCLA and did a great job. A definite upgrade for St John's.

A very good move for St. John's.  But let's not get crazy- the institutional factors such as facilities, fan attitudes and high school star expectations make it a steep hill for anyone hired to be St. John's head coach.

I'm not sure why people are saying they did not like Lavin as a coach when he was at UCLA.  Without some further information on why you did not like him, I'll be here scratching my head.  In 7 seasons as UCLA coach he compiled six seaons with 20+ wins, 6 NCAA bids, 4 Sweet Sixteens and one Elite 8.  Great experience as an assistant coach under Keady at Purdue.  The knock on his UCLA tenure is just odd.  If you are knocking the hire due to lack of ties to NYC, totally agree.  I'm guessing Lavin has a plan on how to rectify that, as eluded in other posts.

Personally I think its a curious hire and one I'll be watching over the next few years.

I suppose voice preference is a matter of personal taste, but I actually thought his commentary was far superior than that of most of the commentators at the tabloid.  I don't catch too many Big Ten games though.

Betting against Tom Izzo when he has a week to prepare?  Now that is gambling....but I can't wish you luck.

Good!  Now I dont have to listen to him analyze and dissect teams he knows nothing about!  Besides that I dont have to worry about Brillcream going out of business!  I feel for St. Johns!

Lavin has forgotten more about basketball than you'll ever know dude. I never liked Lavin as a coach but he was a excellent analyst IMO.
