Cornell's Donahue takes BC job

Posted on: April 6, 2010 10:49 am

INDIANAPOLIS -- Boston College has tentatively scheduled a press conference for Wednesday to introduce Steve Donahue as its next men's basketball coach.

Donahue comes to BC after leading Cornell to the Sweet 16.

He replaces Al Skinner, who was fired last week.

Skinner spent 13 seasons the school and made seven NCAA tournaments.

I wondered why Skinner got canned as well.  It's not like BC is a tournament fixture.  Hopefully Donahue ends up being another good coach for them, but some program is going to get really lucky when they hire Skinner.

Cornell's Donahue takes BC job

Donahue will be good at Boston College, with its strong reputation and recruiting base, but give him time. Since BC is not really a strong basketball school, it will take some time. And it's all about recruiting. If Donahue can succeed at Cornell, he can succeed at Boston College. And if he can get to the Sweet 16 at Cornell, he should be able to do even better at Boston College. It's sad for Cornell, but it's part of the real world.

One can wish that coaches would not so often climb the ladder, but if he does well at BC, someone else will come calling and offer Donahue an even more marquee coaching position. Cornell should be happy that they had him for as long as they did. They should be happy for the success they enjoyed this year, a conference championship, some major wins over impressive competition, and that Sweet 16 birth. They can always say, "He first made it big here at Cornell."

Cornell's Donahue takes BC job

As a Cornell alum I wish him all the luck, but I would rather have seen him move up to a mid-major conference than to jump into the ACC meat grinder.  BC shouldn't even be in the ACC in my view because of their location.  They have to recruit against the Big East and then constantly travel far to play in the conference. Its not a good situation for a new coach to be in.

If you can take Cornell to the sweet 16 then I'm sure he can get B.C. will take time, but good coaches can win anywhere

Well let me get this.  They fire Al Skinner because he cant recruit?  Now they hire an ivy league coach who had a great year.. Did anyone know who the Cornell coach was before this years tournament?  No, neither did I. He should do great going into Roxbury and looking for talent..Not.

Yes, I unerstand a move had to be made.  BC needs a recruiter and thats why Ed Cooley would have been the better choice.  Mark my words this was a bad move...Next 4 years  15-15(no sr.'s on current roster) 12-18, 11-19, 8-22...

Cornell's Donahue takes BC job - Good Luck!!!

here's how the ACC Conf play stacked up 2006-2010:

-50;The U:30-50;Surprise!!!Hewitt:28-52(would have been a disaster for SJU)

With the talent he had, Al Skinner got a bum rap from his DBag AD. Wait'll Donahue gets chewed up in the ACC... ACC has now recently eaten up Hewitt (final Four means nothing now to a demanding fan base), Herb Sendek, Pete G, Leitao, Dougherty,etc...(it almost ate up Gary W. last year, but his support was too strong and he's too good of a coach)...The carnage continues in the BEAST and ACC...

Good choice for Donahue, no doubt. Was it a good choice for BC though? ACC recruiting is quite a bit different than recruiting to the Ivy League, although he did seem to leave Cornell with a decent foundation for the future. Best of luck to him

BC could not have made a better choice. It is simple, Ivy League/Sweet Sixteen= Bigger Job

Good choice. Cornell is losing a lot of seniors, he's on a high, and BC focuses more on football than basketball so there won't be too much pressure to compete right away. He needs to have a good team in a couple years though.
