Report: Gaudio out at Wake Forest

Wake Forest has fired basketball coach Dino Gaudio, according to a report at WXII12.com in North Carolina.

Gaudio coached Wake Forest for three seasons, taking over after the sudden death of Skip Prosser. He made the NCAA tournament in each of the past two years, but still underachieved in the eyes of some considering he had three NBA players on last season's roster (James Johnson, Jeff Teague, and Al-Farouq Aminu) but still lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Those three players are now gone. Gaudio is, too.

This development means two ACC jobs are open.

Clemson opened Tuesday when Oliver Purnell left for DePaul.

Report: Gaudio out at Wake Forest

I feel sorry for Gaudio and his staff, but the truth of the matter is that he should never have been in this position. Gaudio wasn't considered a legitimate head coaching prospect when he was an assistant at Wake; the only reasons he got the job were because Skip died and because Gaudio had a large hand in putting together the Aminu-Walker-Woods recruiting class. When he was hired, I suspect that he was told that he needed to make an impact on a national scale by the time those three left campus.

With Aminu gone and Walker riding the bench, I can understand why Wellman made this decision. In fairness, I think it was the right decision. Watching Wake play at the end of each of the last two years was borderline painful. As teams adapted to what Wake ran, it often seemed like Wake had no suitable counter-measures. On top of that, each of the past two seasons, some of the players looked like they could care less. Both of those problems speak to something wrong on the coaching staff.

I wish Gaudio the best moving forward. He has proven to be an excellent recruiter, and I think that he will be a highly successful assistant coach somewhere.

Now is an ideal time to sever ties. I suspect that our recruiting class will disintegrate somewhat; but honestly, if Wellman makes a good hire, Wake will be better off in the long run.

Well, sort of.  Duke knew it was throwing Coach K directly into the fire in 1980; Foster had left the cupboard BARE and Coach K had no time to recruit.  He got a few guys for the 1981-1982 season, which was the bottom - and if it had stayed like that for a couple more years, Coach K would have been fired.

Also remember, Coach K had Bobby Knight's stamp of approval.  Knight told Butters he would be making the mistake of his life if he didn't hire Coach K.  I'm sure Knight told him he'd be making a bigger mistake by firing Coach K.

But after Coach K got the great recruiting class of 1982 (Dawkins, Henderson, Alarie, Bilas), I don't think getting rid of K was ever seriously considered, even if the media was considering it.  Butters gave K a five year extension in 1983-1984 as the team was clearly getting stronger, so again, I don't think K was ever in jeopardy.

Tom Butters is a guy who never gets enough credit.  The media all had it wrong in debating who was going to be hired, and the choice Butters made was not an easy one, nor was standing behind K in the early 1980s.  But I know for the past 25 years, every Duke fan is grateful Coach K is there, and Tom Butters is the guy we have to thank for that.

He didn't make the tournament all 3 years.  Wake finished 17-13 (and turned down a CBI invite) his first year.  He was 1-2 in the NCAA (including the embarassing loss to Cleveland St last year) and 0-3 in the ACC tourney.
I don't necessarily disagree with his firing, but the timing seems questionable to me.

I think the move is bad timing also, with the sole exception of making a run at Brad Stevens. If Stevens is donning old gold and black by the end of the month, then all is well. Surely you jest...and don't call me Shirley!

Report: Gaudio out at Wake Forest

To quote Florida AD Jeremy Foley "What should be done eventually, must be done immediately". If the Wake Forest administration saw problems developing with the program the worst thing they could is "give him one more year". It seemed well discussed about Gaudio's short-comings as an in game coach. He can recruit, but Wake did seem to lack in fundamental strategies at times.  That said, his track record was decent, probably in line with relatoively recent Wake history, not sure this was deserved. It seems everytime a Butler type team makes a run administrations across the country start asking why they aren't that team and changes start happening. It may have nothing to do with this, but it definitely is curious timing since he made the tourney all 3 years.

Good recruiter awful coach. He had plenty of talent to win the last 3 years. Watch closely they had no clue on the couirt they won only because they had some talent.  With the big men they had they should have been dominating teams featuring them and they didn't.

You mean the same year we won the national title, I assume?  But that's besides the point.  My allegiance to Duke means nothing to me in this thread.  I think what happened to Gaudio is totally unfair and by the other poster's "if you can't get it done in three years logic you never will," Duke would never have kept Coach K.  So I am glad that truly is not the rule.

Good god three years is enough time, if a coach cannot get it done in three years boot that coach out. Good job Wake Forest

I really hate this for Dino, he was a class act on and off the court. I think the move is bad timing also, with the sole exception of making a run at Brad Stevens. If Stevens is donning old gold and black by the end of the month, then all is well. If not, then this is a terrible move.

Other things that I am worried about....

Will the top 10 in the nation recruiting class remain intact after the firing of Dino?
Who will we get if Stevens doesnt bolt Butler?
Does the moving of other coaches and/or success of Duke and UNC in the last two years affect the decision.

Love Wellman and Dino, but I think Dino got the shaft. You will be missed, he is a great man.
