Wright State's Brad Brownell is one of at least five coaches who interviewed for the opening at Clemson over the past two days, multiple sources have told CBSSport.com. The others are Wofford's Mike Young, Jacksonville's Cliff Warren, ODU's Blaine Taylor and former Boston College coach Al Skinner.

Brownell has won at least 20 games four straight years and was widely considered the Horizon League's best coaching prospect until Butler's Brad Stevens rose to prominence this season. The Indiana native was in play for the Indiana job that went to Tom Crean two years ago. His candidacy at Clemson suggests the ACC school is considering hiring a rising star as opposed to someone whose career is on the decline like Skinner, the 57-year-old who was fired at BC last week. Young and Taylor both led their teams to the NCAA tournament this season. Warren coached in the NIT.

Other candidates Clemson has, will or could target are VCU's Shaka Smart, Western Kentucky's Ken McDonald, Ohio's John Groce, Oklahoma's Jeff Capel and Baylor's Scott Drew. Multiple sources told CBSSports.com that Clemson officias desired a meeting with Arizona State's Herb Sendek, a former North Carolina State coach, but that he turned down an interview request.

Clemson is searching for a replacement for Oliver Purnell.

He left last Tuesday to take over at DePaul for more than $15 million.

Brownell knows what it's like to be ignored.  At Wright State, it was Dayton's basketball program; at Clemson, it's the football team.  He's shown he can thrive under those circumstances.

As for hiring a "proven post-season winner", guess what, Clemson fans?  You're not that kind of program (yet); there aren't many of that kind of coach, and the ones that qualify tend to go where the green and the fame are.

good luck with the job search, and may good fortune follow your team.  Anyone but Duke and UNC.

ILL55INI, When Bill Self left for Kansas Ill didn't exactly get a major name in Bruce Weber. "Mid-Major Brucie is struggling after Self's recruits.

Look at Roy Boy's flops at Kansas  before calling him a good coach.  The good ole boy act is a joke too.  Walks into 4 lottery picks before winning in '05...it's not like he recruited them.

Back to the topic at hand...how does Wright do in the NIT's if Butler gets the auto bid every year??  Give me a postseason winner any day.

Brownell would be a great fit!   he knows how to win with limited budgets & a crappy school to recruit at....just like Clemson basketball.  I've personally worked with him.  He can be a hard ass, but also knows what he is doing.

"this Brownell idiot. If he's so good, why didn't Wright St. make the tournament?"

Umm, because it's Wright State.  Yeah, the Horizon league has such a great record of sending multiple teams to the tourney.  I don't know why they couldn't win the auto bid out of that league.  How hard can it be to beat Butler, anyway?

Seriously, pay attention.

Also, Brownell left UNC-Wilmington (where he was successful) because he couldn't stand his athletic director.  Looks like a smart move.

Are you kidding? Wojo? Who would hire that spaz? Have you seen the pathetic records of any former Duke assistant? Give me a break that clown doesn't deserve an interview for any D1 head job.

As a VCU fan I'm hoping and praying that Shaka Smart doesn't get the Clemson job. After having Jeff Capel for two years and Anthony Grant for three, it would be nice to have a coach stay at this school as long as the students who attend it for once.
