The NCAA unanimously passed a recommendation to the Division I Board of Directors to increase the NCAA tournament to 68 teams late Wednesday, and on Thursday reached a new agreement that will allow CBS and Turner, as partners, to broadcast the event starting next season.

The agreement is for 14 years and $10.8 billion.

“This is an important day for intercollegiate athletics and the 400,000 student-athletes who compete in NCAA sports,” said NCAA interim president Jim Isch. “This agreement will provide on average more than $740 million annually to our conferences and member schools to help student-athletes in 23 sports learn and compete.”

The new agreement calls for opening-round games, first-round games and second-round games to be shown nationally on CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV. CBS and Turner will split coverage of the regional semifinal games. CBS will handle coverage of the regional finals and the Final Four, including the national championship game, through 2015. Beginning in 2016, coverage of the regional finals will be split by CBS and Turner with the Final Four and the national championship game alternating every year between CBS and TBS.

NCAA senior vice president Greg Shaheen said it remains unclear how a 68-team bracket will look.

He added it should be determined by "mid-summer."

All games will still be available online.

Yup, I got David Barret's version on my Ipod and its a bazillion times better than what the cow did.

She insulted not only Duke and Butler but college baskeball as a whole by doing cut scenes to show her cow like features. Children screamed women hid their eyes even the med hated it!

Bring back David Barret!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, I think Jennifer Hudson is attractive, but her voice was just beyond awful.

Agreed!!  She did an awful job on "One Shining Moment."  In fact, they should go back to playing the ORIGINAL version of the song. Yup, I got David Barret's version on my Ipod and its a bazillion times better than what the cow did.

David Barrett is still alive, so I don't know why the guy who wrote the song doesn't sing it (especially when his version was incredible). We could go back to Luther Vandross, but now that they play the whole song, we can't ever go back to Teddy Pendergrass, even though he was also great. His version merged the first two verses, so it's a minute shorter than the full version used now.

Oh, wonderful...   Now, we're shuffling a bunch of the games off to cable--which I dropped to save money.  You know, not everyone has cable and recent research has shown that many viewers have dropped cable/satellite.  So, perhaps the NCAA is behind the curve as far as knowing people's viewing habits; again, not everyone subscribes to cable or statellite.  Hopefully, MMOD will still be available for ALL the games as it has been for that last few years...

Do you really think TruTV shows are worth making fun of when you look at CBS's own programming?
Really?

CBS-Turner reach to broadcast NCAA tournament

THIS SUCKS!!!  They better at least have CBS produce all the games and regionalize everything so home teams are on CBS.

You're right. Making money and being successful in life is a terrible thing.  The NCAA (basketball and football) is a horrible example to our young athletes.  We wouldn't have anything (technology, houses, cars, etc.) without the benevolent generosity of charities and the federal government.  (I hope you sense the sarcasm here)
The fact is, successful people make decisions based on market forces.  If they believe they can make more money off of an expanded tournament, then they should expand it.  The quality of the sport will then increase because the amount of revenue has increased.  NCAA basketball has been successful because of the tournament, but they still generate a lot less capital than college football.
There is no football playoff because they make money off of the current system, and there is nothing wrong with that.  If college football did not generate capital, then there would never have been college football.  Period.  CBS does not show SEC college football games on Saturdays out of generosity, they do so to generate advertising revenue, and schools do not spend millions on large stadiums to let fans in for free.  The ONLY way to have a playoff in college football (and that is something I want) is to convince the governing body of the sport to realize that they would generate more capital with a playoff system than the one they currently have in place.  They analyze these possibilities with a lot more information and time than we do, and if they feel that a playoff would reduce their overall revenue stream by diluting the importance of regular season games, then that's how they feel and it will never happen.  If this is the case, then I support their decision.  If, over time, people become frustrated and stop watching college football because of the stupid way they determine their champion, and that decrease in revenue (due to a decrease in viewership) becomes larger than the losses they would incur through a playoff system (due to a decrease in regular season viewership), they will change to suit their customers demands.  This hasn't happened yet, and I don't expect it to in the near future because we still watch the sport.  College football viewership is higher than it ever has been and is still growing, so if you're an executive of the sport, what would you think is so bad that needs to change?  I guarantee that you will complain about not having a playoff... but still watch the sport.  That's not going to solve the problem.
