Former Iowa State star Fred Hoiberg has accepted an offer to become the Cyclones' next men's basketball coach, ABC5 Sports in Iowa reported Tuesday.

Hoiberg has been the Minnesota Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations.

He's replacing Gregg McDermott, who left Monday to take over at Creighton.

Report: Iowa State hires Hoiberg

Proven coaches, eh?  Because proven coaches like Greg McDermott, Todd Lickliter, Billy Gillispie (I could go on) always work out, right?  Bottom line, this hire is no riskier than any other hire.  It's not like the guy doesn't know basketball.  Hoiberg might succeed and he might fail.  He's like any other potential hire in that regard.  The one thing that sets him above any other candidate is that he will sell a ton of tickets next year, and Jamie Pollard knows it.

Report: Iowa State hires Hoiberg

Kathy, that is probably one of the dumbest posts I have ever read. I think that this is first and foremost a ploy to fill seats and winning takes a back seat. I was an athlete at ISU and graduated with Hoiberg so don't talk to me about Iowa loyalty. The guy has NEVER COACHED, EVER! Just because he is a former NBA player, Cyclone, and was "smart" . . . that doesn't him the next Coach K. We are in a major conference and Pollard wants to see if he would be a good coach? Stupid. Idiotic. This is a level for proven coaches and not BS experiments. There isn't another school in any other major conference that would pull this crap. I sincerely hope he can turn things around because I (having a red jacket of my own) feel shame everytime a substandard Cyclone team hits any venue.

Report: Iowa State hires Hoiberg

It always appears darkest before the sun rises.  I like this hire, but I don't like Jamie Pollard.  He's been too caucious and predictible with his previous hires.

Report: Iowa State hires Hoiberg

In FRED we trust.
I love this hire.  I've been jumping around my house for an hour now.  Now I hope Hoiberg keeps Jeff Grayer and that Iowa Energy guy as assistants.  For all the haters posting, they probably aren't Iowans and probably don't understand how we support our homegrown heroes.  Fred Hoiberg was an all-state quarterback and basketball player for the Ames (IOWA) Little Cyclones.  He played in the NBA for about a decade and was always a smart player.  Now he's coming full circle back to Ames.  I am now officially a Cyclone fan again (even though I have to put my Northern Iowa Panthers first).  I hope the Cyclones return to their winning ways.  But even if they don't win under Fred, I will root for them because Iowans live and die with their own.

Report: Iowa State hires Hoiberg

The Iowa State brass need to pull their heads out of their asses. Hoiberg doesn't even coach for Christ's sake. This is the same senario as when they hired McDermott - they knew who they wanted and wouldn't consider any one else. That worked out great didn't it. Get a proven winner you stupid a**holes. There are a few out there and ISU has a decent basketball tradition (or at least did).
