Wear twins reportedly transferring from UNC

Former McDonald's All-Americans David and Travis Wear are transferring from North Carolina and hoping to get their releases "as early as Thursday," the players' father, Dave Wear, told Frank Burlison of the Long Bech Press-Telegram.

"When they return home (to Huntington Beach, Calif.), we will sit down as a family and review their basketball and academic options," said Dave Wear. "... They decided they didn't want to return to North Carolina."

David Wear averaged 10.5 minutes per game this season while Travis Wear averaged 10.3.

The departures leave UNC with just two experienced players who are taller than 6-feet-4 (Tyler Zeller and Jon Henson) on next season's roster. The Tar Heels' three-player recruiting class does not include any power forwards or centers.

There was no SAT issue with Maggette and there was no sweeping it under the rug.  Maggette received several thousand dollars from Myron Piggie (an AAU coach) while he was a high school junior, prior to ever committing to Duke.  That's a far cry from having someone take Rose's SAT after he committed to Memphis.

Wear twins reportedly transferring from UNC

upgrading to UK? this must be one of those joke threads. The twins have no shot of being recruited by UK they're not one and doners, UNC even after a down year is still a better program then UK, that run to the Elite 8 still dosent compare to UNC title in '09. Coaching, I hate to say is the difference, they both get the marquee recruits but Coach Roy is a way better coach then Coach Cal hints that he actually has a couple of titles to his credit. Coach Cal doesnt even have a Final Four to his credit, all have been wiped away because he doesnt follow the rules, he prefer the recruiting title to the national title.

No so sure about that. Yes, it hurts the depth. But on the other hand, as one of the other posters already mentioned, the Wear twins wanted to play on the court together at the same time, and the way Carolina plays, that was not going to happen. At this stage in their playing careers, they are not strong enough nor good enough defenders to play serious minutes - especially the way Carolina likes to play. Frankly, I've always thought that the twins were not the greatest fit for Carolina. I wish them the best - they are smart kids, hard workers and very good players (though I agree with the posters who said they are unlikely to become stars). But the fit at Carolina was not a good one.
As for Roy Williams, yes his frontcourt is now much thinner than it would have been had Davis and the Wear twins stayed. but on the other hand, playing time may have been one of the issues that plagued this team last year. Now the Heels have a much better rotation (assuming everyone stays healthy) and will become a more guard-oriented program, which of course is what Roy was famous for while at Kansas. With the guys coming in, he can still use Graves and Barnes for he frontcourt rotation along with Zeller and Henson. I assume that Zeller will take the scoring role previously handled by Thompson while Henson assumes the rebounding/shot-blocking role that Davis had this year. And Graves is the depth and the three-point shooting along with Barnes.
Last year's team had multiple issues. Maybe the wholesale changes will clear out some of those issues so the coming season's team can start fresh and erase some of those bad memories. And unless injuries prove to be an issue again this year, I think that Roy might be better off with a smaller rotation as opposed to the excess of depth this year's team possessed on paper.

How would that be an upgrade? Ky just became relevant again after years of irrelevance. Of course, the Wears would certainly benefit from the Kentucky bball salary provided to their "student" (LMAO) athletes.

Okay.. I have now officially got off the floor from laughing.  Upgrading to Kentucky???????   Give me a break.  Not helping their GPA?????   Give me another break.  Kentucky is not exactly known for it's academics and although I used to admire the program, I no longer do.  I read about the cheating and rules violations for years during their glory years.   North Carolina on the other hand has run a clean and above board program.  There is no upgrade for the twins by going to Kentucky.  A definite downgrade.

Cal and Memphis weren't implicated (except for playing a player who's entrance test score was invalidated after the season ended AND being initially cleared to play.), As a matter of fact, it is more likely that the cheating occurred at the high school level as several of the high school players had their test scores invalidated. Only one went to Memphis and several others were either low division 1 or division 2 prospects. Don't think a college coach would go to such trouble to get several players eligible for just one prospect he was interested in. If Carolina had played a player in a similar situation, it is likely they would not have had to forfeit any games. The NCAA isn't always consistent on it's application of enforcement.
NOW, UK did have a coach involved in at least one fraudulent ACT test (although he wasn't named directly). Eddie Sutton's Son Sean (then a recruit) drove another recruit who was struggling academically to an ACT test site in Lexington (the prospect was from Georgia visiting during a high school tourney game) and magically improved his score enough that it sent red flags up. The player was ruled ineligible and never player division one again and UK forfeited all the NCAA tourney games they played in '88.

This is definitely a huge loss for the Heels. I mean, no one is going to mistake the Wear twins for Tyler Hansborough, but if nothing else, they would have been solid contributors off the bench. However, with Ed Davis leaving, the Heels were already looking at another rebuilding year anyway. This probably just reinforces that theory. I hate to say it, but it looks like Duke will be the best in the ACC next year, but look out for UNC in 2011! (Assuming Barnes comes back for his sophmore year)

Anyone downplaying these transfers is off base. Anytime you lose two double-digit scorers, it's a big deal.  Are you for real? Niether was a double digit scorer. They are not really suited for Carolina as starters. They just don't have the talent to start at Carolina.Carolina was down last year because they lost all their starters from the year before. With the talent coming in, they will be right back in the championship race next year.

True, except for the double digit scorers part.  3.5 and 2.9 points per game doesn't even add up to ONE double digit scorer!
