Strickland demoted at Kentucky

Posted on: May 13, 2010 11:00 am

Kentucky assistant Rod Strickland, in the wake of a drinking-and-driving arrest, has been demoted to an administrative role, which should clear the way for Oregon assistant Kenny Payne to join John Robic and Orlando Antigua on John Calipari's staff.

"Rod Strickland has been a vital part of our success here at Kentucky and helped set a foundation for our program,” Calipari said.  “He will continue to be an integral part of our future successes in a non-coaching capacity."

Worth noting is that Payne is a close friend of William Wesley, the basketball powerbroker with longstanding ties to Calipari. Assuming Payne fills Strickland's spot at UK, the Wildcats might then become the favorite to land Terrence Jones, the McDonald's All-American from Portland who is still deciding between Washington and Kentucky.

Payne recruited Jones while at Oregon.

This is also the first time I've heard it called a "demotion" publicly. Granted, it may very well have been, but that's not how it was released by the university. I believe they said Rod requested to be reassigned. Whether or not thats how it really went down, I don't know, but I do know Gary is clearly taking a shot at UK.

KY has contacted Jerrance Howard

Illinois Assistant Jerrance Howard has been contacted by Kentucky according to a report in the Champaign News-Gazette in which Howard confirmed that Kentucky has contacted him. Illinois gave Howard a big raise last year and is THE key recruiter for the Illini. Howard was on Billy "too drinky's" staff when he was at Kentucky. If Howard leaves his Alma Mater it would be a huge blow to Illini recruiting.

New KING in Kentucky

Even more interesting than the petty acquisations and evil associations is the fact that King Cal is embracing former Louisville Cardinals. Neither a Cat or Card fan, I find it just another notch in the top Guns recruiting pistol. Little Ricky is being topped over and over at his own game.

No Dustin, it's the UK fans that choose to ignore the facts when defending Calipari.

The guy is the only coach in NCAA history to have TWO final fours vacated. Two. Not one. At seperate schools, in different eras. "Oh but he wasn't found guilty of anything." No, no he wasn't. Just guilty of tarnishing the name and reputation of both schools, while both times having his travelling shoes on to another glitzier, more lucrative job.

Those are all facts. It really happened that way.

Keep defending Calipari all you want, all the UK fans who trashed him like madness when he coached for Memphis. It'll just make it that much funnier when (and if, to be fair) he a) leaves you high and dry or b) has another shady NCAA violation blow up while packing his bags for a sunnier location, leaving his school and the people who hired him, protected him, enabled him, and defended him to clean up his mess.

I really hope that Calipari never wins an NCAA title, because the guy is a horrible in-game coach and it would be terrible for all NCAA coaches who are actually good coaches but don't have the connections, money, pedigree, slickness, LeBron WWW connection etc. to recruit at the level Calipari does.

Has ANYONE in the NCAA done less with more talent than Calipari in the last 15 years? No bloody way.

So, worst athletic GPA in the school...worst GPA for the men's bball team in a number of years...assistants severly demoted for DUI...sounds like Cal is on track.

DustinM, please do enlighten me on this amazing team that you had that went to the elite 8.  How many titles has the great Calipari won?  How many final fours has he had vacated?  Those are cold hard facts.  Kentucky stooped pretty low with this hire.  They weren't exactly going after someone that was highly thought of in the college basketball community.  Agree?

If perspective is fleeting at UK, it certainly hasn't landed in or near Duke.  People with a DUI conviction after nearly ten years without an incident rarely go to prison.  How many people do you know that lost their job under similar circumstances?  Rod Strickland is a good person with a family that made a stupid mistake.  Kentucky did not ignore it or take it lightly but properly removed him from a direct relationship with the players.  That seems to be a pretty reasonable balance.
