Strickland demoted at Kentucky

Posted on: May 13, 2010 11:00 am

Kentucky assistant Rod Strickland, in the wake of a drinking-and-driving arrest, has been demoted to an administrative role, which should clear the way for Oregon assistant Kenny Payne to join John Robic and Orlando Antigua on John Calipari's staff.

"Rod Strickland has been a vital part of our success here at Kentucky and helped set a foundation for our program,” Calipari said.  “He will continue to be an integral part of our future successes in a non-coaching capacity."

Worth noting is that Payne is a close friend of William Wesley, the basketball powerbroker with longstanding ties to Calipari. Assuming Payne fills Strickland's spot at UK, the Wildcats might then become the favorite to land Terrence Jones, the McDonald's All-American from Portland who is still deciding between Washington and Kentucky.

Payne recruited Jones while at Oregon.

You obviously don't know much about Wall, Cousins, Patterson or the rest of our team this year. No worry though, people who want to bash UK or Calipari are rarely concerned with logic or facts so you and your ignorance at least have company.

Demoted is the best option for Strickland.  Fire him and you're pretty much giving him over to the wolves.  Keep in the same role and it might be hard for him to work the twelve step program that I do believe the man is in.  He's not Billy Clyde.  To my knowledge Strickland has never denied having a problem.

Payne and Jones?  Worldwide Wes and Calipari.  I don't know, but as a Kentucky fan, I'm beginning to feel a little tawdry. A little like Kevin Federline back in the day. This was what you wanted and it's damn nice to be here, but still when you look in the mirror, it's all just so damn exhausting.

Response to The Wombat--cool username btw, pic looks like a Scooby Doo villain.

ANYWAY, I believe Strickland has just two DUIs. Regardless, in the wake of the Gillispie shenanigans, and in light of how protective of its image UK is, I would expect a zero tolerance policy on such behavior. Strickland should be out. Period.

Mr. Calipari,

I am good friends with a 5 star recruit here in the state of Kansas (Perry Ellis).  I will send you my resume tomorrow.  All I want is $250,000 per year.  Look forward to working for you soon.  Thanks!

Once again Calipari shows what a crook he is

He will stop at nothing to weasel recruits away from other programs. Where there is smoke there is fire, and that guy has a big, black cloud hovering over his head. Rotten to the core.

Strickland demoted at Kentucky

Funny, this is the 1st article I read that has stated it as a "demotion".  All the local papers are merely calling it an administrative move.  I'm not saying that it is, or isn't but what is clear is THIS article was written with a pure stick 'em in the ribs vibe.

So far as the "hiring a coach to get a player" side-bar; I guess that's how the game is played these days.  Certainly hear good things about Payne and his recruiting abilities.  If he and Cal are buds then why not?

Only a matter of time before he leaves you guys again and you try to poach our coach at Florida.  Can't wait to win the SEC next year.

No, your coach isn't elite anymore.  Kentucky made a mistake by not hiring Donovan in 98, Donovan made a mistake by not coming in after Tubby.  Kentucky's first choice was Calipari last year.  We don't need your coach.  The Pitino/Donovan era is over.

Win the SEC?  Ha!  First, you have to be considered in the SEC east.  I'm more concerned about Tennessee and Vandy.

What a knucklehead your mother tried to raise.  It's 2010 and nobody wants your coach anymore.

UK used to be such a proud and classy program, but everything associated with Calipari is crooked and bad.  If he was such a good coach and players loved him like they say, then why do they all leave.  The florida team that stayed and won back to back titles loved each other and their coaches and they will forever be remembered in the history books.  Calipari's squads are full of selfish, me first players.  Sounds like they mimic their coach exactly.  Only a matter of time before he leaves you guys again and you try to poach our coach at Florida.  Can't wait to win the SEC next year.

Dustinm, it's the old "shots on goal" theory...throw enough spaghetti against the wall and something will stick, and you can claim credit for it.
