Strickland demoted at Kentucky

Posted on: May 13, 2010 11:00 am

Kentucky assistant Rod Strickland, in the wake of a drinking-and-driving arrest, has been demoted to an administrative role, which should clear the way for Oregon assistant Kenny Payne to join John Robic and Orlando Antigua on John Calipari's staff.

"Rod Strickland has been a vital part of our success here at Kentucky and helped set a foundation for our program,” Calipari said.  “He will continue to be an integral part of our future successes in a non-coaching capacity."

Worth noting is that Payne is a close friend of William Wesley, the basketball powerbroker with longstanding ties to Calipari. Assuming Payne fills Strickland's spot at UK, the Wildcats might then become the favorite to land Terrence Jones, the McDonald's All-American from Portland who is still deciding between Washington and Kentucky.

Payne recruited Jones while at Oregon.

Gary is the proud winner of the...

work William Wesley's name into a story he has nothing to do with award. Mr. Parrish has won this award multiple times and continues to be a visionary as it relates to working Wesley's name into stories where he isn't relevant. Congratulations on another award Mr. Parrish.

Btw, it does seem odd for him to demote Strickland and bring in an asst. who's his friend right before he's about to leave for the NBA, go figure.

Gary thanks for keeping the Worldwide Wes connection to Cal visible in this move. Thought I read several months ago that Wes was going to come out of the closet this summer and actually declare as an agent?  Anybody have an update on that?  Come on down T Jones - you can sign a Grant-In-Aid just like Brandon Knight did - no need for an LOI among friends.

The interesting thing to me is the WWW connection to everyone, and it seems that WWW was a UL desciple years ago, and I'm wondering why UL fell out of favor with him?  Anybody know the back story on it?  Cliff's notes is all that I want..Don't want a long history to read.  Just curious.

Payne will go to UK like Milt Wagner went to Memphis (and got a Memphis degree to be an assistant).

Payne and Cal are tight. Who wouldn't want to come to Kentucky? Especially since he was at Oregon... Yeah, he played for U of L but nobody's perfect lol He would have a top assistant spot at a top basketball program to launch his head coaching career... $$$ and opportunity will speak louder than "well I played at U of L, can't go to UK" He may actually realize how inferior his alma mater is to the top program in the state. Side note: Cannot wait to play U of L in their new "arena" which does not even seat the same amount of fans as Rupp. Sort of ironic that the arena is named after a company known for fried birds (KFC) that as Kentucky in the name. GO CATS!!!

Parrish knows waaaaaaaay too much about Cal and UK.  Yea, I knew about the D and D arrest for Strickland, but would Kenny Payne (ex Louisville Cardinal player) really come to UK?
Undecided

Giving Strickland another chance is commendable?  You think that makes Calipari a gracious guy?  That's his fourth DUI.  People with that many DUI convictions often go to prison, and for that habitual type of offense righfully so.  All Calipari has done is assign Strickland a new title to make it appear as if he's really cracking down, but notice that he kept him within the program so as to still benefit from any of Strickland's contacts for recruiting purposes.  How many chances does Rod need before he seriously injures or kills someone after he's been drinking?  Perspective is clearly a fleeting thing in Kentucky.
