Report: Nebraska expected to join Big Ten

An executive at a Big 12 school told the Omaha World-Herald that he expects Nebraska to become a member of the Big Ten as early as Friday, the paper reported late Tuesday night. If true, it's a development that could trigger Texas and five other Big 12 schools to move to the Pac-10, at which point the Big 12 would cease to exist.

"I think before too long -- I don't know exactly what the time frame is -- we'll be able to put this to bed," Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne said Tuesday night on the Husker Sports Network, according to the World-Herald. "There's a lot of information we really don't have right now. Hopefully we'll get these put together in the next few days."

Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman is expected to discuss realignment with the Board of Regents Friday.

Report: Nebraska expected to join Big Ten

No way Penn St, Ohio St and Michigan are in same conference. Swap Northwestern or Illinois with Penn St.

East and West Division

Free Safety,

I can't disagree overall, although as a Spartan it hurts to not be bolded.  Yeah, I know, we're a basketball school and this is about football.

You can't move UM to the West, the MSU and OSU rivals are too significant.   They'd end up playing those two schools every year either way, which would limit their ability to play IU, PSU, Purdue or Wiscy if they moved to the West.

Although their fight song says something about "leaders of the West" I think.

I don't know much about Nebraska, but inside the Big Ten you've kept most of the rivalries intact and managed the travel, PSU and Nebraska  will always be the outliers, but won't play one another often.

Report: Nebraska expected to join Big Ten

Texas has flaunted their money for a long time in two different conferences. Nebraska is jacked because they aren't the big dog they used to be. If I were the other Big 12 schools I would find out if A&M,Tech,Baylor,OU, OSU, and CU really have any loyalty to the "horns. Think about this. Kick Texas out of the conference then do the same with NU and MU. NU and MU would join the Pig 10 immediately and go on with little difficulty. But if everyone else stays loyal to the Big 12 rather than Texas and their Lording tactics, then maybe Texas could be taught a lesson. With Mu, NU, and Texas$ gone maybe we could do some inviting of our own. Say Arkansas, Memphis, and LSU. These 3 and their fan bases would not cancel out the losses by kicking the unloyal trio out but they would be the closest. Texas would have a lot of interest then, possibly the Big 10,Pac 10, and maybe the SEC. But would they be as powerful? Not without the ability to influence other Texas schools. With the 3 conferences and the scenario described above the 'horns would be stuck in south Texas all alone. They would be separated from every oother conference described by at least one state. This would eventually lesson their relevance once the honeymoon ends. Think about it. When schools are only interested in fulfiling their greedy appetites, kick 'em out on their spoiled rotten a$$es! Show them how stinkin' important they are! They are nothing more than terrorists with a mentality that they believe entitles them to more. Let them take there ball and go home.

Big Ten Name Change

I agree that the name is largely irrellevant, but wonder if they couldn't leave it as the Big Ten?

PSU joined in 1990, so it's been ten years since the moniker has been accurate and there is some history there (founded in February 8, 1896) that I wouldn't abandon lightly.

The name of the conference is irrelevant. It obviously will be called something else; how about "The Big America Conference"?.  Again, don't get hung up over the name.  That's easy to change.

Other Big 12 Schools

I think the other Big 12 schools (those without big football programs) are hoping that the big 3 conferences (Big 10, Pac 10, SEC) go for 14 or 16 teams instead of stopping at 12.

If the target is 16 (and Notre Dame is still defened by the chants of "Rudy, Rudy!"), on top of Nebraska (12) the Big Ten could take
13  Missouri - rivalry with Illinois and the geography works.
14  Iowa State as an in state rival to Iowa.  PSU, OSU, Wisc and Minn would still lack an in state rival, but there aren't many obvious choices

;     &nbs
p; in those states to add.  Pitt, maybe?  Cincy, really?
15  Kansas and 16 KSU - largely for basketball, the geography works with Neb, Miss and the Iowa schools

There are 5 out of the Big 12 right there, the Pac10 or SEC take another 5 and maybe two are looking for Conference USA or Mountain West.

If ND joins the Big 10 I could see them stopping at 14 as there won't be much additional tv benefit or cache once that piece is in.

Report: Nebraska expected to join Big Ten

I am from Texas and I won't blame Nebraska for joining the Big Ten. They would be right to do so. It will be a shame to lose some of the rivalries that the Big 12 have like the Texas-OU Red River Rivalry and some of the other great ones like Kansas-Missouri and Nebraska-Missouri and OU-OSU and so. You know, I quit watching pro sports several years back because in the pros it is all about money. Now that has moved down to the college level. It is becoming all about the dollar bill. I grew up watching the SWC and the great Texas-Arkansas games. I am now a fan of the MWC and a huge TCU fan. I will be very sorry to see the Big 12 fall apart. Anyway, I thought that conferences should have something to do with your regional location. Oh well, I wish Nebraska the best of luck.
