Report: Nebraska expected to join Big Ten

An executive at a Big 12 school told the Omaha World-Herald that he expects Nebraska to become a member of the Big Ten as early as Friday, the paper reported late Tuesday night. If true, it's a development that could trigger Texas and five other Big 12 schools to move to the Pac-10, at which point the Big 12 would cease to exist.

"I think before too long -- I don't know exactly what the time frame is -- we'll be able to put this to bed," Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne said Tuesday night on the Husker Sports Network, according to the World-Herald. "There's a lot of information we really don't have right now. Hopefully we'll get these put together in the next few days."

Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman is expected to discuss realignment with the Board of Regents Friday.

Yikes, I sense some anger issues here. Maybe they would've offered a bigger scholly if you'd brushed up on the spelling, Tide. It's cesspool dude. Wink Have fun this fall at NU. But, have someone edit your papers!!

Report: Nebraska expected to join Big Ten

I'm all for anything that will help football but this is ridiculous.  The wide expansion of several of the conferences is going to kill tradition and keep powerhouses on top.  How are teams like Iowa and Michigan State in the Big Ten, or Oregon State and Washington supposed to have a fair shot to contend when teams like Texas, Nebraska, etc. will be competing for recruiting in conference.  Purdue recruits a lot of Texas.  Who would ever pick Purdue if Texas is in the Big Ten?  Football is not something that should be altered to become more commercial.

If Nebraska joins the Big 10 and the Big Twelve is dissolved, do we then become the Big 12? I still hope to see Notre Dame join the Big 10. How 'bout some ideas for a new conference name.

Report: Nebraska expected to join Big Ten

There will be no love lost for Nebraska in Kansas City.  I mean, jeez, it's Nebraska.  Nice farm folk, I'm agree, but a cold, desolate, depressing place where football and only football will ever come close to thriving.  And as far as that goes, their glory days are behind them.  Their program may win a few, but to say they'll ever touch the greatness of their teams in the 70's is at best a stretch.  The Big Ten is going to GREATLY regret extending this invitation 4 years from now.  As a fan in general of the former Big Eight and not the former Big Twelve, I say screw it all.  If college football makes the sports world go around, let me off at the next stop.

Report: Nebraska expected to join Big Ten

Makes me sick to see how money and power has consumed what should be amateur athletics.

I agree it is greed, but it is mostly greed out of necessity.  I cannot think of any major university that doesn't rely on it's football program to anchor funding for alot of the minor sports.   As a university, one can only increase the cost of season tickets so often and therefore generating additional revenues to cover costs of supporting the minor sports becomes problematic.  In the case of Nebraska, the additional monies generated by the Big 10 network (for the Huskers anywhere from 10 million to 15 million per year) will go a long way in covering the minor sports costs.

Great thread.... notice how there are no replies.  Why people make comments like Highawk is beyond me, the numbers speak for themselves.  GO BIG RED!!!

The Big Ten really blew this bu announcing their intentions and not acting. Texas, although not a great geographic fit, is a perfect academically. Of course, it is not a good geographic fit into the Pac-10 either. The addition of Texas, Missouri, Notre Dame, Pitt, and Syracuse would make a perfect balance.
