Colorado will announce Friday that it is leaving the Big 12 to join the Pac-10, a Big 12 source confirmed to CBSSports.com on Thursday. The Boulder Daily-Camera is reporting that Pac-10 officials will be on the Colorado campus for a formal press conference.

This is the latest development that could lead to the demise of the Big 12 considering Nebraska is expected to also announce Friday that it's leaving the league. Multiple media outlets are reporting that Nebraska will join the Big Ten, which is expected to trigger an additional exodus of Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to another league, most likely the Pac-10. It's worth noting that officials from Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Baylor are meeting Thursday in Austin to discuss their futures, according to OrangeBloods.com.

If Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State follow Colorado to the Pac-10, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Baylor and Iowa State would be left looking for a new league. They could all go their separate ways into existing leagues, stick together and join an existing league, or stick together and try to lure schools from other conferences -- like the Mountain West and C-USA -- to help start a new league.

The realignment is all about money.

Big-12 is a 16-year conference which has proven to be successful, but only competitive in the South. The North is a joke. If a conference is that unbalanced, it will fail. The big-12 South will go on to the Pac-10 and TX & OU will likely dominate that conference (esp. since USC is in trouble). Cal & Oregon may be the only real competitors and OK State is more comparable to Oregon than OU/TX (OSU & Oregon both heavily supported by billionaire booster). (Oregon is 1-6 vs OU & 1-4 vs TX)

The PAC-10 has won 44% of games vs Big-12 schools (only 41% vs Big-12 South). Big-12 South will clearly improve the football of the PAC, but will worsen academics. B-Ball? OU/TX are premier B-ball programs.

I wonder if the USC sanctions will make Texas think twice about joining the Pac 10. Without a dominant USC the conference looks a lot weaker. Right now the Big Ten or SEC is the place to be. If the Big 10 can add Notre Dame, Nebraska, Texas, Okhlahoma, and one other team that would be a hell of a conference.

If this happens, then Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State and Baylor should pull TCU, Utah and BYU from Mountain West, Boise State from WAC, Arknasas from the SEC, and SMU and either Rice or Houston from Conference USA, and keep the Big 12 name or actually rename themselves The Southwestern Conference.

Football-wise, the conference will still be very strong and can divide themselves up into two divisions as always. basketball wise, the conference would be shockingly deep. Kansas K-State and Mizzou would lead the charge, Baylor is an up and comer, BYU and Utah are always strong, Arkansas can be a sleeper and Houston is good, and of course the rest are fillers.
