Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins will resign at the end of the 2010-11 school year, according to KUSports.com.

The leadership of Perkins, who has been KU's athletic director since 2003, has been questioned in recent months because of a scandal over inappropriate tickets sales and a blackmail allegation surrounding his use of exercise equipment. An internal investigation cleared Perkins of any wrongdoing in the exericise equipment case, but the outcome of an FBI and IRS investigation into the ticket scandal is ongoing.

Perkins missed two days of last week's Big 12 meetings to testify before a grand jury.

Kansas AD to resign

You cannot be blackmailed unless you've done something ethically or criminally wrong. Accepting free equipment five years ago when the provider was a Vendor to the Athletic Department certainly smells fishy, a late and nominal payment five years later notwithstanding. Further, if the allegations of preferential ticket treatment are proven, this case turns into a felony bribery case, not an ethics case.

The two internal whitewashes...er investigations... were both limited in scope, did not involve subpoenas or other investigative interviews and were primarily to quiet the rumblings over the ticket scandals, much less the free equipment issue. Further, the ticket scandal apparently started before Perkins arrived and he personally hired six of the individuals, including the Director. The very fact that he micromanages everything else, but apparently turned a blind eye to this, is quite telling. Furthermore, most of the seats involved were some of the most prime seats in Allen Fieldhouse. Tell me one high powered Athletic Director that doesn't know all the big time donors by first name and where they sit, yet for years, big donors have been crying foul about their seat selections to the Athletic Department and no one has placated them, yet no one ever knew the names of the no-name non donors who were sitting in these prime seats. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

Kansas AD to resign

Turner Gill has been a winner everywhere he's been, as a player and coach.  Give him time.  He turned Buffalo around!  Imagine how difficult that would be!  The KU football program will have a rough year next year, but after next season, they'll get better each year.  Trust me, you guys have the right man for the job there.

His staff under him was running roughshod for most likely 10 years, not 5. Someone has to be responsible. Lew was asleep at the wheel. The KU sports car crashed. RIP, Lew...
