Report: Texas to commit to 10-school Big 12

Texas is set to announce, perhaps as early as Monday, that it is now committed to remaining in the Big 12 even without Nebraska and Colorado, according to a report by Chip Brown at OrangeBloods.com.

This is the latest development -- and by far the most important -- in the ongoing expansion of conferences. If it happens, it would greatly damage the Pac-10's hope of getting to 16 members by adding five more Big 12 schools to go with Colorado, which announced a move to the Pac-10 last week. The Pac-10 would probably then be reduced to adding Utah to create a 12-member league.

Orangebloods.com reported that Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebee has informed Texas it could make between $20 million and $25 million per year under a proposed new television deal, plus whatever it could make -- perhaps an additional $3 million to $5 million per year -- by starting its own network. It is unclear whether Beebee's estimations are accurate. But, either way, Texas is listening. The school now seems set to hold the Big 12 together and by extension prevent the nation's first "super conference" from being created because the Pac-10 stopping at 12 could cause the Big Ten to hold at 12, at which point it's possible the SEC's interest in expansion would also feign.

The Big 12 has no scheduled announcement of any kind as of Monday afternoon.

Meetings are reportedly ongoing.

Report: Texas to commit to 10-school Big 12

Texas is just waiting. They want more teams to leave the conference so that Texas does not appear to be at fault for the total collapse of the Big 12. Then they will join up with another conference or go independent. The person who wrote this is quite obviously an idiot or a Nebraska fan. The two are often one in the same. Please remind us who started all this talk and who the first two schools to leave were.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe the Big 12 needs to start thinking about bringing in some schools also, im sure there are plenty of div 1AA schools that would move up if they cant get the bigger schools, similar to what Boise ST did in the late 80's.

Report: Texas to commit to 10-school Big 12

lets face it. The big 12 was set up originally for texas. they get the most money and the most perks for being the the big 12. the other schools do not benefit as much as texas does in the big 12.  I say all the schools should leave and make the greedy people at texas learn their lesson. that is the only reason texas is waiting as long as they are now to leave the big 12. they want to get more money for the big texas....whoops i mean big 12. good for A&M going after their best interest, and i hope texas tech will do the same and join the pac-10 and have texas holding their pants up. I' m not a texas hater, im just tired of seeing texas manipulate and hurt the other big 12 schools.

Report: Texas to commit to 10-school Big 12

I agree with a previous post... why not get a jump on these other conferences and put togather a BIG 16 conference. Maybe look towards invites from Conf USA... the conference break down would like something like this:

NORTH
;     &nbs
p;     &nb
sp;     &n
bsp; SOUTH
Iowa St.     &n
bsp;     &
nbsp;     Baylor
Kansas
;     &nbs
p;     &nb
sp; Houston
Kansas St.     &n
bsp;     &
nbsp;  Rice
Memphis    &nbs
p;     &nb
sp;     SMU
Missouri    &nb
sp;     &n
bsp;     &
nbsp;Texas
Oklahoma    &nb
sp;     &n
bsp;   Texas A&M
Oklahoma St.     &n
bsp;   Texas Tech
Tulsa

;     &nbs
p;    Tulane

As for the remaining teams in Conf. USA... they could join up with the Big East, with exception of Texas El Paso... they could join up with the WAC, unless A&M jumps to the SEC, then they would go BIG 16 South.

Thoughts everyone???

JustChampionship: I'll let you in on a little secret, LSU is a rival of A&M besides Arkansas (from the SWC). A&M has played LSU more times than Auburn has played LSU. Just a little SEC fact

Report: Texas to commit to 10-school Big 12

If I were the Pac, I would ask for a commitment from Kansas.  It was either going to be Kansas or Utah since A & M did not want any part of the Pac.  Get Kansas to commit and house of cards fall.
Texas has played their hand perfectly.  If the Big 12(10) continues, they are the hero that kept it together.  Plus, they will get their network and they will set themselves even more apart then the rest of the programs financially.  But, if the Big 12 was in turmoil WITH NE and CU, then how will it be more secure without them?  If anything Texas gets bigger while the rest get smaller.  I do not see 2 other teams out there that have the AAU academic status and markets that Neb. and Col. gave you.  TCU is just another small TX market and Ark...is..well Ark.  I know the coaches want this move to get the recruiting presence in CA.
Make no mistake, the super-conferences will form...it is just a matter of time.  The SEC, Big 10 and ACC will continue to go after additional teams for the super-conference.  Is there is a better fit for a super-conference than the PAC and Big 12?  Our program models are very similar.  I hope the Big Pac step up and be the first to evolve.

Report: Texas to commit to 10-school Big 12

Being from Utah this has been intresting to watch, especially with what is going on with the University of Utah, the MWC, and BYU. Being a fan of both schools I hope that some how they can stay together. But one thing I dont understand is this. Yes utah won the to BCS games, and busted the BCS. But the really power in the state when you think about TV ratings and the market is BYU. They also sell out every game and travel well, just look at OU game last year. So when it comes to adding TV revenue going after Utah over BYU makes no sense if you are looking to fill out the rest of the big 12 and even the pac 10.
