Big East denies Orlando TV report about expansion

An Orlando TV station report that Memphis and Central Florida could both receive Big East invitations "as soon as next week" has been refuted by the league, associate commissioner John Paquette told CBSSports.com on Thursday.

"We are officially denying the Orlando station's report," Paquette said.

The station described the invitations as "highly likely" to happen.

The station's sources were characterized as "multiple college football sources."

Meantime, the Orlando Sentinel described the Orlando station's report as "premature" but added that Big East officials will privately discuss expansion during a Thursday teleconference. This all comes five days after CBSSports.com reported that Memphis could receive an invitation to join the Big East "soon." That report came while other media reports detailed the Pac-10's plan to expand to 16 schools and eliminate the Big 12, which would've likely created a slew of movement throughout the rest of the nation. On Monday, however, Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe convinced the 10 remaining Big 12 members to commit to his league. That led to the Pac-10 only inviting Utah and, almost certainly, halting expansion at 12 members, which most believe will prevent the Big Ten from raiding the Big East in an attempt to reach 16 members and by extension prevent the Big East from having to recover.

Utah is expected to accept an invitation to join the Pac-10 on Thursday afternoon.

The Big East currently features eight football-playing members and 16 schools that compete in men's basketball. The additions of Memphis and Central Florida would give the Big East 10 football-playing members and 18 schools to compete in men's basketball -- plus two notable television markets, the nation's third-largest university (UCF), and another nationally relevant basketball program (Memphis).

Gary's crappy radio show

Seriously, this guy talks about Greg Oden's junk for half the show, and then he expects people to take his "journalism" seriously?  He is a porky, egotistical, narcissictic, punk who routinely relives his "glory days" of 10 year old soccer.  He and his life partner Geoff Calkins are a joke.

Report: UCF and Memphis 'likely' to join Big East

It'd be nice to kick em all out except Nova and Georgetown.  Try to get the money from TV close to the ACC and see if we can get more if BC comes back.  If we get the money close to what BC can get from the ACC maybe they will be back.  If we cannot get them back or at least one more BCS school this won't mean shiz.

After Gary did his best to screw it up for Mem.

He has failed.  His alma mater will enjoy the fruits of the BCS despite his report slamming FedEx and Memphis.

Suck it Gary!

Report: UCF and Memphis 'likely' to join Big East

Adding University of Central Florida to the Big East will be a nice boost to the conference and to UCF.  UCF is a huge school that needs a better conference to boost its football program.  Letting kids in the other schools of the Big East see that they can play games in Orlando will be quite attractive, and Orlando will be great for Big East Tournaments.  (The Orlando Magic have a beautiful new arena opening this fall.)  Plus, University of South Florida (in Tampa) and University of Central Florida (in Orlando, 2 hours away) will be able to establish a great in-state rivalry.  Memphis brings lots of money (from Fedex) and a great basketball program.

Time to kick out 2 BB-only teams

Dude, just kick out DePaul and Marquette to stay at 16.  They're geographic outliers who would be better off in the Missouri Valley, Horizon League, or dare I say basketball-only members of the Big 10.  Or else kick out all the BB-only schools.

I thought USF, already in the Big East,  was the biggest school in Florida?

Report: UCF and Memphis 'likely' to join Big East

I would feel better that this story is accurate if WESH-TV reported it first, since they have the TV relationship with UCF. Plus, Pingalore isn't very good at his job. However, if it is true, it is a very good move for both teams for football. UCF won't help the basketball league much, but it will eventually help baseball.
