Coach K lands a third Plumlee

Posted on: July 10, 2010 11:23 pm

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski secured a third commitment from the Plumlee family Saturday when Marshall Plumlee told Scout.com that he plans to sign with the Blue Devils in November.

Marshall Plumlee is the  younger brother of Duke forwards Miles and Mason Plumlee.

The 7-foot center is rated 40th by Scout.com and 81st by MaxPreps.com in the Class of 2011.

He chose Duke over Virginia.

I have to admit, I am surprised to get a reasonable and constructive response from a UK fan.  Nicely done.

We'll have to see if enough leadership stays around for '11-'12. I don't expect it, but if they do get a few guys to hang around, then you will be right.

I don't think hitting three more 3s would have changed the game that much. It was a 16 point lead with 4 minutes to go. UK finally hit some shots in desperation time while WVU was in celebration mode. Huggy knew UK hadn't shot the 3 ball very well all year and his gameplan reflected that. Of course I am speculating just as you are, so it is certainly possible that a couple shots could have altered the course of the game, but I doubt it.

UK will not have that type of guy for the foreseeable future.

Something you obviously missed off last year's team was the leadership of John Wall.  Cousins said he actually yelled more during games than Cal did.  Now leadership could be the downfall of next season's team and I will admit that.  6 of the 10 scholarship players for next season are freshmen and a juco transfer.  But like I said earlier, 2011-12.  That's the season we could do major things.  Experience and leadership combined with another #1 class.

Even if UK had hit a reasonably percentage of those 3's they were missing, they still would have lost.

We shot 4-56463746 from 3 and lost by 6 or 7.  Had we gone say, 7-56463746, and had hit a couple more earlier in the game, the tide of that game completly changes, WVU never gets a 16 point lead.  We don't take as many dumb shots, and maybe, just maybe, Huggy Bear gets out of the 1-3-1, switches to man, and John Wall turns that game into a track meat instead of a UFC fight.

The best day in UK history is when players get drafted to the NBA.

For the record, that was not the best day in UK history.  But if we win titles with players who came to UK because they wanted to play in the NBA, and they saw guys who averaged 3 points for UK getting drafted in the first round.  Then maybe that night last month would be the biggest in UK history in a few years.

As UNC proved last year, a lot of young talent doesn't get you anywhere.  UK would not have been nearly as good as they were without the veteren leadership of Patterson.  UK will not have that type of guy for the foreseeable future. This year's team will not be as good as last year's team. Not to mention the cupcake schedule that UK played last year made them appear to be championship caliper when WVU proved they were no where close to being.  Even if UK had hit a reasonably percentage of those 3's they were missing, they still would have lost.  Calipari will always be able to assemble talented teams that will win a lot of games. But it takes more than talent to win the Natty.  And Cal doesn't care about winning titles anyway.  The best day in UK history is when players get drafted to the NBA.

Kentucky will continue to recruit one and dones and Kentucky will continue to choke in the NCAA Tournament.

704, in 2011-12 this statement will be seriousky tested.

Off next season's team we will lose Josh Harrelson to graduation, and likely Enes Kanter, Terrance Jones, and Brandon Knight to the NBA.  Leaving Kentucky with 4 open schollys to go along with 3 that still aren't filled for next season.  Those 7 schollys will be filled by Michael Gilchrist (#1 by Rivals and everyone else), Marquis Teague (#5)and some combination of the following players...

Quincy Miller (#2)
LeBryan Nash (#4)
Anthony Davis (#8)
Adonis Thomas (#18)
Ky Madden (#19)
Kyle Wiltjer (#22)
Quinn Cook (#23)
Chane Behanan (#24)
Tony Wroten (#26)
Johnny O'Bryant (#36)
And probably a lot more that I'm too lazy to look up.

Now, combining 7 recruits in the top 36, with the majority of a team that will likely finish in the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 with an SEC title, experience from DeAndre Liggins, Darius Miller, Doron Lamb, Stacey Poole. Eloy Vargas, and Jon Hood (3 seniors, 1 junior, 2 sophs), a little DDM, and some celebrity appearances from Ashley Judd and Drake and the nex thing you know...BAM

You look like an idiot and I'll be doing the Mike Gilchrist Dance (I'm assuming he'll come up with something to replace the John Wall Dance:)

The fact is, that while Duke does recruit a lot of white players, they can win with a lot of white players.  Like I said, Duke will continue to recruit "goofy white players" and Duke will continue to hang the championship banners.  Kentucky will continue to recruit one and dones and Kentucky will continue to choke in the NCAA Tournament.

The most recognized goofy white guy ever to wear a Duke uniform hit the most identifiable shot ever in Duke's history beating Kentucky in the most famous of all NCAA games ever played.

You forgot to mention how Laettner tried to stomp a hole in UK's Aminu Timberlake and should have been ejected earlier in that game.

More recently in 98 Duke had the best team in America by far, guys like Battier, Brand, Trajan Langdon, Wojolasdfklasfkjd, Roshown McLeod, heck that team was so good Mike Dunleavy Jr. had to redshirt because of the guys in front of him.  (Wojoasdjflasdjasf was the only white guy in the rotation BTW)  They had a 17 point lead on Kentucky with less than 10 minutes to go in the Elite 8.  Then Kentucky playing a rotation of Scott Padgett, Wayne Turner, Jeff Sheppard, Cameron Mills, Nazi Mohommed, Jamaal Magloire, Allen Edwards, and Heshimu Evans came back and beat the best team in the country.  Best part was when Scott Padgett put the go ahead 3 in Elton Brand's eye with about 30 seconds left.

Oh 704 I forgot to say why the goofy white guys were the worst players on your team.

This was the Dook strategy last season...Singler, Sheyer, and Smith score as much as they possibly can, everyone else, get out of the way.  Think about the average Dook possession.  Sheyer brings the ball up court passes to Smith, Smith dribbles around, hits Singler, who hits Sheyer who launches a 3, he misses, then Zoobeck or Plumlee (either one) gets the board and within 1 second of touching the ball fire it out to someone who's last name begins with S.  Their job was to not shoot unless no one was within 20 feet of them or if someone who's last name begins with S wasn't open.  (This is why I believe had Kentucky not gone 4-546165 from 3 against West Virginia, and we had gotten you guys in the Final Four, we would have won by at least 20.)

Had Butler gone with triangle and 2 defense (like a box and 1 but with 2 players being faceguarded all over the floor), with Norad and Mack guarding Smith and Singler, shutting off Duke's most explosive scorers and forcing the goofy white guys to beat them, then Butler would have won the national title.
