MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A body found Wednesday in a wooded area in southeast Memphis is former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, CBSSports.com learned early Wednesday.

The Wright family released a statment late Wednesday night confirming the death.

Wright was 34 years-old.

"Lorenzen’s family has come together to mourn his loss and honor his legacy," the statement said. "We appreciate your thoughts, prayers and condolences as they are comforting at this very difficult time. Additionally, we ask that you please respect our privacy as we try to cope with his sudden loss.”

Wright was last seen July 19 and reported missing last Friday. Memphis Police have not confirmed anything. But multiple media outlets are reporting that Wright was shot multiple times, meaning this will likely be considered a homicide investigation into the death of the former lottery pick.

Wright's death has special meaning in Memphis. The 6-foot-11 center is the rare athlete who played high school basketball (Booker T. Washington High), college basketball (University of Memphis) and professional basketball (Grizzlies) in his hometown. He leaves behind six children.

I am afraid the death penalty, as currently adminstered by any State, doesn't deter crimes from happening at any faster rate than life in prison.   The punishment is simply not swift enough to gain any kind of significant reduction in serious criminal behavior.  It ends up taking many, many years with countless appeals and costing taxpayers mucho dinero.    ..Give 'em one appeal and 6 months from found guilty to execution, now that might make a difference.

Unfortunately the death penalty in California (at least) is no deterrente (sp) as the appeals take forever. If the death penalty was enforced within 5 years that would definitely make a difference.

You are correct NOTORIOUS. Numerous studies have shown that the Death Penalty as a deterent logic does not hold. In a modern society there is no justified reason for putting someone to death, regardless of what they did. We can keep people locked up for good forever with relative ease. I know it is easy to say not being a victim of a capital criminal, but my hope is that my faith would leave me feeling the same way even if I was.

every state needs the death penalty....crime will go down and if not they strap down the criminals and there (evil)history

Actually, statistically, the death penalty hasn't shown to be any kind of deterrent to capital crimes.  On top of that, who are you or anybody else to decide who should be put to death and for what?  I'm no limp wristed liberal, but if you condemn someone to death, you're no better than them.  Either way it's killing.

So sad. I hope its not him. I hate that Memphis is still on course to be one of the most violent cities in the U.S.

Someone is getting sued over this. Took police 5 days to take the missing person report seriously even with a hang up call to 911 from his cell phone. Absolute shame. He was one of my favorite Tigers.
