MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A body found Wednesday in a wooded area in southeast Memphis is former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, learned early Wednesday.

The Wright family released a statment late Wednesday night confirming the death.

Wright was 34 years-old.

"Lorenzen’s family has come together to mourn his loss and honor his legacy," the statement said. "We appreciate your thoughts, prayers and condolences as they are comforting at this very difficult time. Additionally, we ask that you please respect our privacy as we try to cope with his sudden loss.”

Wright was last seen July 19 and reported missing last Friday. Memphis Police have not confirmed anything. But multiple media outlets are reporting that Wright was shot multiple times, meaning this will likely be considered a homicide investigation into the death of the former lottery pick.

Wright's death has special meaning in Memphis. The 6-foot-11 center is the rare athlete who played high school basketball (Booker T. Washington High), college basketball (University of Memphis) and professional basketball (Grizzlies) in his hometown. He leaves behind six children.

The DNA point of proving convicted people innocent actually can be used for proponents of the death penalty.  DNA proves innocence, but also proves guilt beyond reasonable doubt.  I dont use the bible to back up my belief.  I just dont believe taxpayers should have to pay for a murderer to live.  But I do believe DNA is the only true way to be sure.

PLUS, how many times have they found DNA proof FREEING a death row inmate...and then you have the inmates that get wacked and were innocent. Death penalty doesn't deter and it is not infallable.

I don't even know what to say about some of the "logic" displayed in this thread regarding the death penalty.  As many here have noted, there is NO evidence whatsoever that the death penalty is a deterrent to murder.  And, as many have noted, there are people executed for capital crimes who have later been proved innocent by DNA evidence, etc.

So some of you advocate the death penalty (under which innocent people are executed) when in fact it does nothing to deter the crime it punishes?  Because of some vague Biblical "eye for eye" concept?  Really?  You want our criminal justice system based on Old Testament translations of translations of translations of languages nobody has spoken for thousands of years?  Should we go back to all the laws and customs we find in the Bible?  Like slavery?  Bigamy?  If not, who gets to pick which Biblical laws we do adopt?  I'm sure you geniuses can figure that out.

And then the staggering claim that "the death penalty would be a stronger deterrent if we executed more people."  Wow.  Really?   What evidence do you have to back up that claim?  Can you see into alternate, parallel universes?  If so, why are you posting on this board?  You should be on Oprah or The View , dude.  Or maybe Paranormal State .  Let me get this straight--if we have MORE of something that isn't working, it WILL work?!??!  Do you even think about this stuff before you type it?

Sadly enough, it's typically "pro-lifers" who are typically the most enthusiastic proponents of the death penalty, even though it takes innocent lives and does absolutely nothing to reduce murder rates.

als and there (evil)historyActually, statistically, the death penalty hasn't shown to be any kind of deterrent to capital crimes.  On top of that, who are you or anybody else to decide who should be put to death and for what?  I'm no limp wristed liberal, but if you condemn someone to death, you're no better than them.  Either way it's killing.

Of course stats dont back it up.  and if we keep letting these people sit on death row for 10-20 years it wont ever be a good deterrant.  But I dont think people actually leading decent lives should have to pay the bill for murderers to sit in prison for the rest of their lives.  We have enough tech now with DNA to know whether most people commit the crime or not.  If people know for sure their crime will result in death I believe it will work as a deterrant.  But not the way it is used today.

So glad I moved out of Memphis. Lived there 16 years and totally lawless and unsafe. No wonder everyone wants to live in suburbs. Lorenzo seemed like a good kid in school, it will be interesinting to see what the story is if the police ever bother to try and find out.

You win the award for the most ignorant, hateful and insensitive post I have seen in some time.  You need to see a shrink to deal with your issues.

eye for an eye....who were they to decide they could take someone's life. The death penalty isn't a's so people like you and me don't have to pay taxes for these people to rot away in jail.
