MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A body found Wednesday in a wooded area in southeast Memphis is former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, learned early Wednesday.

The Wright family released a statment late Wednesday night confirming the death.

Wright was 34 years-old.

"Lorenzen’s family has come together to mourn his loss and honor his legacy," the statement said. "We appreciate your thoughts, prayers and condolences as they are comforting at this very difficult time. Additionally, we ask that you please respect our privacy as we try to cope with his sudden loss.”

Wright was last seen July 19 and reported missing last Friday. Memphis Police have not confirmed anything. But multiple media outlets are reporting that Wright was shot multiple times, meaning this will likely be considered a homicide investigation into the death of the former lottery pick.

Wright's death has special meaning in Memphis. The 6-foot-11 center is the rare athlete who played high school basketball (Booker T. Washington High), college basketball (University of Memphis) and professional basketball (Grizzlies) in his hometown. He leaves behind six children.

It is a shame that I see little in the way of prayers and condolences being posted to the Wright family, and more of a debate about the death penalty and people checking the spelling of other people in a game of one upsmanship. Frown

Let us keep things in proper perspective because if indeed the story is correct then a mother just experienced any parents' worst nightmare which is their child being killed and having to make funeral arrangements and bury. On top of that six young children just lost their father.

This is just a call for compassion right now, and when law enforcement does their investigation to determine whether it was a homicide or a suicide then the banter can go towards death penalty and anything else your hearts desire.

My prayers and condolences go out to the entire Wright family especially his mother and his children.

Studies have shown that the US prisons are not a deterent since the vast majority of inmates are repeat offenders.  So with the premise that the death penalty does not deter people from murdering people so why have any prison.  And by the US Justice having Capital Punishment does not make them equal with the killers because if the murderer did not murder then they would not find themself on Death Row.

CBS:  "It remains unclear if this was a suicide or murder."
Other (smaller yet far more thorough) news outlet:The reported that the body was indeed Wright's and reported that Lorenzen's body had sustained a dozen gunshot wounds. Both reports cited sources within the Memphis Police Department. Doesn't exactly sound like it's "unclear" if it was suicide or murder.  Sad way for Wright to go.

Dude, you need to learn to exercise a little compassion. And to wait until the facts come out and shed some light on this story. Bottom line is that someone is dead and all you can do is write this garbage. Darrant Williams? Are you kidding me? Wasn't he shot in a drive-by, and Sean Taylor a victim in his house. Next you'll say Steve McNair deserved being killed by that lunatic chick or Chris Henry deserved to die after being thrown from a moving truck.

It's true that fame brings about a different reality that many people tend to enable. There may even be corrupt reasons why some of these men are dead, but have a little respect. And, as of right now, none of these men have been linked to anything 'wrong' in terms of their deaths.

Bulls***.  Someone's always getting sued.  That's absurd.  You don't mention a word about the loser idiot that did this, but you have to blame someone.  Police aren't perfect.  They make mistakes, and they shouldn't be sued over them.  What an idiot.

Yeah except that states with the death penalty actually have HIGHER murder rates - swing and a miss.  Iran called, they want their judicial system back.

It has been shown time and time again that the death penalty is not an effective deterrent to crime... Add in the fact that they get so many wrong. Way to spout off like a uneducated redneck.
