MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A body found Wednesday in a wooded area in southeast Memphis is former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, CBSSports.com learned early Wednesday.

The Wright family released a statment late Wednesday night confirming the death.

Wright was 34 years-old.

"Lorenzen’s family has come together to mourn his loss and honor his legacy," the statement said. "We appreciate your thoughts, prayers and condolences as they are comforting at this very difficult time. Additionally, we ask that you please respect our privacy as we try to cope with his sudden loss.”

Wright was last seen July 19 and reported missing last Friday. Memphis Police have not confirmed anything. But multiple media outlets are reporting that Wright was shot multiple times, meaning this will likely be considered a homicide investigation into the death of the former lottery pick.

Wright's death has special meaning in Memphis. The 6-foot-11 center is the rare athlete who played high school basketball (Booker T. Washington High), college basketball (University of Memphis) and professional basketball (Grizzlies) in his hometown. He leaves behind six children.

I have to say that those of you using this thread as a forum to express your opinion on capital punishment are incredibly selfish and self-absorbed. Lorenzen Wright is most likely dead-most likely murdered-and it JUST happened.

Respect to Lorenzen and his family.

Thank you, ukfanfrombirth.  Everyone jumping in on the death penalty debate before anyone is even sure what happened are showing a complete lack of respect for life.

The death penalty is a rational solution to reduce captial crimes.  Unfortunately people who commit capital crimes are rarely rational.  For that reason the death penalty does little to reduce captial crimes.  Some people are inherently evil and/or mentally ill.  No matter the cause, I'm sad that Wright died, at the hands of another or his own.  My condolences to his family and friends.  RIP

I don't think there are enough cases of the death penalty to have accurate statistics about the effectiveness of it. You commit murder and our society rewards you with 3 meals and cable t.v. for the rest of your life. So it looks like the only people that are condemned are the people that are murdered.

This is sad, i think he owed some people some money and they killed him for not paying up. I seen on the news that he had money problems. This is terrible the guy was just in the NBA a few years ago. This shows atheletes need more than basketball skill because when its over it over meaning their career as a hooper in the league. I will be watching Sportscenter to get the late's news on the matter. All i can say is Rest In Peace Lorenzen Wright.. you will be missed Brotha

I would not agree with your statement Notorious.  1.  There are plea bargains.  2.  Your belief that by putting someone to death for KILLING SOMEONE we are no better than the killers.  Well if the killers did not kill in the first place they would not have to worry about the death penalty.  And what about the person the killer killed.  How dare you brush aside that person's right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness  (Declaration of Independence).  3.  Our entire judicial system is so weak The vast majority of people in jail are repeat offenders so jail time is not a deterent.

Alot of people are saying the death penalty is not and will not be a deterrent. Bullcrap, if it was done right it would be. Swiftness is the key.

Although I am not advocating the same type of punishment, lets look at some other countries for example. They chop off the hands of thieves. It deters a lot of thieves, and the ones that try again and get caught get their other hand chopped off. Its tough to steal when you only have nubs!

Again, I don't necessarily think that is how we should handle thieves, but decisive and harsh action needs to be taken quickly in the event of any crime, once the perpetrator is identified. Obviously other things need to be considered, such as age of the perp, circumstances surrounding the crime, past criminal history, etc. But if there were more instances where the punishment fit the crime and quick, decisive action was taken, our prisons probably wouldn't be quite as crowded today. There will always be plenty of people trying to do wrong, but harsh punishment will deter many people, because they know the consequences won't be a walk in the park. It will also help with rehabilitation. If you've got a prisoner who on their first offense gets punished more severely than he was expecting (such as 6 months jail time and one year suspended license for a first DUI), chances are he'll watch himself a little more closely the next time.....

thats all.

Sure like criminals really think about being caught before they commit crimes. If you support the death penalty then be honest you support revenge that's all it is clear and simple. You may not have a problem with that and that is your perogative but the 'it is a deterent argument' is just false on its face. In the heat of the moment, when committing a crime no person stops and thinks 'oh no this state has the death penalty I better not do this'.
