MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A body found Wednesday in a wooded area in southeast Memphis is former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, CBSSports.com learned early Wednesday.

The Wright family released a statment late Wednesday night confirming the death.

Wright was 34 years-old.

"Lorenzen’s family has come together to mourn his loss and honor his legacy," the statement said. "We appreciate your thoughts, prayers and condolences as they are comforting at this very difficult time. Additionally, we ask that you please respect our privacy as we try to cope with his sudden loss.”

Wright was last seen July 19 and reported missing last Friday. Memphis Police have not confirmed anything. But multiple media outlets are reporting that Wright was shot multiple times, meaning this will likely be considered a homicide investigation into the death of the former lottery pick.

Wright's death has special meaning in Memphis. The 6-foot-11 center is the rare athlete who played high school basketball (Booker T. Washington High), college basketball (University of Memphis) and professional basketball (Grizzlies) in his hometown. He leaves behind six children.

Very sad day for the town, University, and of course his family. The time I met 'Ren at the YMCA here in Memphis a few months ago he was nothing but nice when I wanted to talk some Memphis hoops with him. RIP.

Have you ever seen the statistic that keeping a prisoner in California is more that $70,000 a year.  That's rediculous! If they commit murder why do they diserve to live off of law abiding citizen's tax money.

I do have issues with that. I also have issues with prisoners having access to quality healthcare when 30% of our country does not (other then emergency rooms). But I still couldn't conscientiously back the death penalty with the amount of innocent people we convict.

Eye for an eye.  If you kill then society, as a whole, has the right to extinguish your life.  I knew a man who was sentenced to death and is dead now.  He attacked my sister.  She survived.  A mother and her young daughter were not so lucky.  He delivered furniture to this young mother's home a week before he killed her and her daughter.  He raped both of them before killing them.  A piece of crap like that deserved death.  Now let him burn in hell for eternity.

First off, the Death Penalty issue, i dont believe in it, BUT i think we should not only throw people in prison if they kill someone, BUT also get a public whipping. I believe in whippings then prison time for crimes, especially murders, rapes, any violent crime and really any crime, but i think there should be a certain amount of times the person gets hit with the whip or belt. I think both a whipping and prison time will deter more crime, but it wont happen here, so let's move on to the real story.

I feel for Wright's family and friends, a sad day if you know him. Losing a loved one isn't easy.

Death Penalty > ?  what if it was a suicide ?
Death penalty only solves one thing over crowded jail cells . it never has prevented crimes ..

Actually, statistically, the death penalty hasn't shown to be any kind of deterrent to capital crimes.  On top of that, who are you or anybody else to decide who should be put to death and for what?  I'm no limp wristed liberal, but if you condemn someone to death, you're no better than them.  Either way it's killing.

Personally, I have no problem with putting somebody to death per say. My problem lies with the number of innocent people found guilty. I saw a statistic somewhere that something like 15% of the prison populations are innocent of the crimes they are being held for. So, would you continue putting people to death knowing that 3 out of every 20 you do are innocent?

Could be him?  Chances are if the body is that of a 6' 11" black man that was found near his home it's Lorenzen Wright.  Also other sources are saying that the 911 call happened on Monday not 5 days ago.
