Davis commits to Kentucky

Anthony Davis committed to Kentucky on Friday a week after Michael O'Brien of the Chicago Sun-Times alleged that his father, Anthony Davis Sr., "negotiated a deal that promised $200,000 from someone who wanted" the heralded prospect to pledge his allegience to UK.

Anthony Davis Sr. confirmed the commitment to Scout.com.

"I hope UK is ready for the NCAA to come on in," one high-major coach texted to CBSSports.com after the story broke, point being that the NCAA will almost certainly spend time examining Davis' recruitment based on nothing more than the Sun-Times article. At this point, it doesn't matter whether the allegation has merit. This development will be scrutinized regardless, which is why many industry sources believed Davis might ultimately choose DePaul, Ohio State, Syracuse or some other college -- anybody other than Kentucky -- after last week's story went national.

But he didn't.

Consequently, John Calipari is now assured of having the nation's best recruiting class for the third straight season. Davis, ranked fifth in the Class of 2011 by Scout.com, is the third prospect ranked among the top six nationally to commit to UK. He joins Michael Gilchrist (No. 1) and Marquis Teague (No. 6).

Oh, boy idiots like you make it so easy for me to make a response. "Kentucky is back on top." Lol.  Please tell me how Kentucky is back on top.  The only thing that Coach Cal can do is recruit.  Because he sure as heck can't coach.  Remember those three teams, that had the best talent by far, and he still couldn't win with them.  UMAS, Memphis (38-1) and that "great" class of Kentucky last year.  If you want to look at a team that is on top, look at my Duke Blue Devils or even Michigan St.  Those are two teams that can be considered as on top. Not your class of 1 and done's that probably won't even make it to the Sweet 16.  "Kentucky on top", Please.

Mr. Parrish--I was sorry to detect a slight decline in your heretofore unparalleled prowess relative to your most honorable profession of sports journalism. Your omission of the National Enquirer as a source to bolster such rock-solid leads as "high-major coach[s]" who lost out on Davis, as well as your allusion to the air-tight Sun-Times article, seemed to weaken this where-there's-this-much-journalistic-smoke-ther

e-has-to-be-a-fire article, IMO.

But in your defense, everyone makes a slip every now and then. And we are talking about the U of K here. Who could ever forget that infamous "Kentucky's Shame" Sports Illustrated article of just a few years back? When it comes to Kentucky, the recent influx of guilty-until-proven-innocent articles is certainly understandable and justified.

Keep up the good work.

This is not as much about Kentucky recruiting as it is about questionable journalism.  Say what you will about Coach Cal and Kentucky, but if there was ANYTHING to the alleged payments, then I would think Kentucky would not have taken him.

The real questions are was O'Brien duped by say, DePaul.  Or did O'Brien print an unsubstantiated rumor.  Either way, these journalists (sports or otherwise) are so hell-bent n being first, that they someties are not right.

And whe this happens, which seems to be more and more often, the people they write stories about pay the price.  Davis is a kid, yes, a very talented kid, but a kid.  If this story is all crap (i.e., O'Brein reported rumors as facts or he was duped) then he needs to be fired, at a minimum.

Let the truth come out.  If O'Brein is vindicated, then we all owe him an apology.  But if otherwise, O'Brein needs to be fired and exiled.

Davis commits to Kentucky

I guess this is the time of year for Kentucky fans to really gloat.  The one thing Calipari has alway been the best at wherever he's been is  signing those top recruits.  Of course, there was a time when Kentucky used to actually WIN championships, something Calipari has never done and won't do with his endless string of freshman all-star teams.  It will end at UK the way it ended at Memphis and UMass, with Calipari slipping out the backdoor as the NCAA comes in the front door to vacate all his wins.  Maybe not this year, but it'll happen.

Sort of leads you to believe that Calipari and the Davis family are willing to undergo that scruitny.  Wow, wouldn't it be something if there's really nothing to hide and all these stories and rumors turn out as empty as Al Capone's vault.

Coaches are the biggest cry babies of all. They just can't stand the fact that Kentucky is back on top. Whaa Whaa Whaa Whaa. Bunch of  damn whiners . It's great to see so much interest in Kentucky basketball again. A high-major coach texted CBSSports.com to do what, tattle on UK that the NCCA is going to look into to you all. Who was the the little baby or can't you reveal your source if there was one. Go Cats, remember you have to worry when there not talking about you. We got'em just where we want'em . They're pissed and scared, and they're desperate and they'll say anything and do anything to try and stop the Big Blue. I think it's great!!

I can't believe any school would touch Davis after the alleged payoff story broke.  I can't wait to hear all the Kentucky fans cry when the NCAA comes knocking on the door and starts asking questions.  Whether the story is true or not, its going to bring some unwanted attention.  I believe any school that accepts him will be looked at.

Perhaps someone needs to investigate whether DePaul paid this moronic tool to slander this kid like this....
But, to the jacka$$ O'Brien and all the haters out there, SUCK IT!!
