Austin Rivers -- a star at Winter Park High in Florida who is ranked No. 1 at Rivals.com, No. 2 at MaxPreps.com and No. 3 at Scout.com in the Class of 2011 --has verbally committed to Duke, multiple recruiting analysts (Scout.com's Evan Daniels, Rivals.com's Eric Bossi and ESPN.com's Paul Biancardi) reported Thursday morning.

"He picked Duke because of [Mike Krzyzewski] and his staff," Winter Park coach David Bailey told Biancardi. "There is a ton of tradition at Duke, and it was the best place for him from a basketball and academic standpoint."

Rivers is a 6-foot-4 guard and the son of Celtics coach Doc Rivers.

He chose Duke over North Carolina, Kansas and Florida, where he was once committed.

Rivers' commitment to Duke leaves Adonis Thomas as MaxPreps.com's highest-rated prospect yet to announce his college decision. The 6-6 wing from Melrose High in Memphis is ranked No. 3 in the Class of 2011 and is still considering Arkansas, Florida, Memphis, Tennessee and UCLA. Thomas is visiting UCLA this weekend along with No. 12 Quinn Cook, a 6-0 point guard from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia.

Your comments are true, but he or no kid at that age should be able to commit. At the time, his decision to attend Florida was probably based on it being close to home and they were the top team in collegiate sports, be it football or basketball. Things have changed, and thus so did his decision. He'll be a star at Duke, and he'll get plenty off time on the tube (Nationally) for people to see and enjoy his skills as a basketball player.

Awesome news. This will help him get a fantastic basketball education and help form him into a great NBA player, I hope. Is this kid the kind of talent that could've jumped straight to the NBA before the new one-and-done rule? If so, I'm glad he's able to experience some college and have a little fun before things get too serious. Good for him!

Great pickup Duke.  I think you will get Irvin to stay at least until his Sophomore season.  That should be a heck of a team in two years and you guys are going to be pretty good this season.

Rivers has also said since the 9th grade that he is committed to the gators.  As his stock rose, he felt a two time national champion wasn't good enough for him.  So don't trust this kid's word or his fathers.  He would have been a star at Florida.  I've lost a lot of respect for the kid.  Don't commit anywhere unless you know that's where you want to be.

I think Kyrie will stick around for his soph season...I'm sure they discussed this during their time together this past summer on the USA National team.

LOL @ jordan.  I love the smell of desperation in the morning!  We hang a National Championship banner and the holes put up an NIT banner.  I remember not too long ago they were saying Duke is finished and K would never get the better of Roy again.  Maybe if Roy Boy spent less time in the tanning bed he'd get a kid like Rivers.
