Oliver Purnell landed his first signature prospect at DePaul on Wednesday when Shane Larkin -- son of former Cincinnati Reds star Barry Larkin -- verbally committed to the Blue Demons.

MaxPreps.com ranks Larkin 71st in the Class of 2011.

Rivals.com has him 62nd.

He's a 5-foot-11 point guard who reportedly averaged 19 points, five assists and five rebounds last season at Dr. Phillips High in Orlando. Colorado, Central Florida and South Florida were other finalists for Larkin.

yoyozig, I did over do it. But Larkin is slighted, the Jeter example I mentioned is true. It's skewed heavily in Jeter's favor by the limelight factor. Jeter's in it constantly, Larkin was always in the shadows. I know it's opinion, but I fully stand by it when I say Barry Larkin was every bit as good as Derek Jeter is/was. The limelight and  because Jeter was "part" of talented teams gives Jeter extra credit on his report cards. Everything else say they are nearly identical presences on a baseball field.

Sorry, ltrb, but you are out of your mind about Larkin being the "last great short stop".  While he was a great player, and may deserve a shot at the Hall, he was only the best shortstop of his era for a 1-2 year period.  Even according to your definition of what a shortstop "should be", he isn't even the best of the last 20 years.  Jeter is a much better fielder and hitter...Omar Visquel is a much better defensive shortstop (maybe the best in history) and has similar hitting stats.

All he has to do is recruit Chicago. Just like the Tigers do in Memphis. It's a shame that program is not better....

Hey DBowman you're right Purnell's work is surely cut out for him. Depaul might be able to put it all together one season we just have to wait and see. Some more good commitments and some tough defense against the Big East elite and they good do it.... Go Blue Deamons!

In an unrelated story, Max Dernier, the nephew of former Cubs player Bob Dernier, was hired to stock shelves at a Topeka, Kansas Walmart.

"We're tickled pink to have Max join us here at the Walmart," said Assistant Manager Hoyt Perkins.  "We believe with all our hearts that he'll be a tremendous asset to our warehouse staff."

Congrats to Oliver Purnell in landing a Top 100 player.  Glad to see that he's probably going to be able to translate his program's recruiting prowess from Clemson to DePaul.  My only hope is that his in-game coaching gets better.  I love ACC basketball and I always thought his biggest coaching bugaboo was making adjustments during games to counter what the other team was doing to his Tigers.  Sometimes they would come out like a house on fire and put another team down by 15-20.  But after the other teams caught on to what the game plan was, made adjustments, and ended up putting Clemson on the defensive, he never seemed to make in-game adjustments to take control again.  I wish him all the best since I think he deserved more respect than he got at Clemson.  He's got his work cut out for him at DePaul-- they've been terrible for quite awhile now.

The name Larkin alone says he'll be a productive add for Depaul.

Barry the last great SS in my eyes. (I believe in old school baseball philosophies in which SS was a defense first position, not a source for 30,40,50 HR's) And Barry was a very solid, "professional"
;batter as well. Think Derek Jeter, but without the same attention. I hope the HOF doesn't spit on his career.

Have to agree.  It seems to run in their genes.

Also the nephew of Xavier's all time leading scorer, Byron Larkin. The Larkin family is pretty talented.
