You remember Syracuse from last season, right?

Tennessee lost an exhibition to Indianapolis on Monday night.

Indianapolis is a Division II school.

So now the folks who talk about college basketball in November -- and that number isn't nearly as high as I'd like it to be -- are making predictable and sweeping generalities, apparently forgetting how another school that wears orange suffered a similar embarrassment a year ago last week.

"Hopefully we can learn from this and move in the right direction," Syracuse's Wes Johnson said after last preseason's exhibition loss to Division II Le Moyne. He then proceeded to learn from it and move in the right direction, i.e., the direction of a Big East title and No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Which is why Bruce Pearl shouldn't be overly concerned.

Granted, there's a chance what happened Monday at Thompson-Boling Arena will ultimately prove to be the first sign that the off-the-court drama surrounding the program will have an on-the-court effect that'll cause the Vols to fall short of expectations. But it's just as likely that this defeat means absolutely nothing, which is pretty much what I told a distraught Syracuse fan who emailed after the Orange's loss to Le Moyne last November and proclaimed his favorite team's season "just ended before it ever began."
"This isn't going to be as bad as you think or as bad as it was Tuesday night. I can't find proof right now (I've been looking for 15 minutes), but I believe UMass lost an exhibition in the 1995-96 season, then went on to make the Final Four. Grand Valley State famously beat Michigan State in an exhibition two years ago, and the Spartans still made the Sweet 16. So losing a game like this isn't necessarily a prediction of what's coming."
Those were my words filed within 24 hours of Syracuse's loss to Le Moyne.

My levelheadedness served me well.

So while I do wonder if the Vols will miss Wayne Chism, J.P. Prince and Bobby Maze more than most anticipated, the reality is that I've seen Pearl win with rosters much worse than the roster he has now, and I'll still be shocked if Tennessee isn't a borderline Top 25  team that competes for the SEC East title and makes the NCAA tournament. In other words, Monday's development didn't change my opinion of the Vols one bit. My guess is that they'll bounce back Friday and open the regular season with a double-digit win over Chattanooga, just like they were always going to do.

You remember Syracuse from last season, right?

dude, what are you talking about and what does that have to do with the exhibition loss?

first off, you are comparing apples to oranges.  players getting paid and coaches knowing about it along with academic fraud vs. fibbing about a photo to the ncaa and a few extra minutes on recruiting calls.  tn served very harsh penalties on pearl and staff - you should look it up.  pearl can't even make an off campus recruiting trip for a year and the ncaa is yet to dole out additional punishment.

no school is perfect, but you are lumping varying degrees of charges and expecting the same punishment.  don't involve yourself in the judicial system at any point.

and yes, you hate the vols.  it's obvious.

The silence from Knoxville

One thing that continues to totally amaze me about the U of Tennessee.  Whether it's football scandals, or basketball with this Pearl NCAA recuriting gaffe, when they seem destined for a substantial punishment by the NCAA, things get real quiet up in Knoxville and these things habitually blow over.  Time and again, something that other schools (read: USC, Memphis) don't get away with, for some reason, you don't hear about it for a few months, then on page 14 of the newspaper, you see where the 'NCAA has dismissed the charges/violations/etc against the UT (place specific athletic program name here) due to (place weak reason here)."

I don't hate the Vols, nor do I like them, but they must've hired the Ghost of Johnny Cochran to haunt the heirarchy of the NCAA....

To all the Vols fans...guys/gals it's not the end of the world. I witnessed the very same last year, but a fan is a fan..I am Syracuse to the bone...last years loss to LeMoyne was all anyone could come up with...even after Cuse elevated themselves to the #1 spot (short as it was) and a #1 seed in the tourney. I never give much weight to pre-season anything anyway and neither should Vols fans. It's nothing to worry about unless it follows into the season! Keep your heads up and and cheer on your team...good luck to the VOLS during the season, your team HAS talent and a good coach (regardless of what others might say).

Let the games begin!!!
Here's to another exciting season!!!
As always.....................GO CUSE!!!!!

Don't Sweat It

Fellow Vols fans, don't worry about it. 1) It was just an exhibition and 2) I think Derek Dooley was coaching 'em last night. Pearl will be there for the season's start.

Hey CUSEYOURSELF, i said exactly what you thought I didnt say.  Just goes to show, just like yacksman said, that you know very little about college hoops.  trojones seemed to get that.  Probably a well educated man unlike yourself.  I was refering to Melvin Goins shooting a 3 in turners face and sent him to the NBA with nothing but a sweet 16 under his belt.  Also refering to the fact that we only lost 3 people from last years team that made it to the Elite 8.  How far did Syracuse go last year??  Thought so.  You lost to Butler in the round of 16 if Im not mistaken.  And im not.  Tennessee is in rough times right now, football is young and lacks experience, and Pearl just killed our recruiting class for the next few yrs.  However, we currently have a team that has plenty of talent with Tobias Harris, Top PF in this yrs class, John Fields, a transfer who will provide us with depth at center, and 2, 4 star guards.  Add in Pat summits freshman son, and you have yourself a talented team WITH depth.  Something Syracuse lacks!  I will not sit here and say that Cuse sucks, cause im not an arrogant fool.  They SHOULD make it to the tourney.  But you dude, need to know your role and shut it. As for my fellow Vol fan kingfishvol, Pearl may have lied, but he didnt cheat.  And before he came here to Knoxville, I dont remember basketball as it wasnt relevant cause all they did was lose.  Now we challenge for the East each year winning the past 4 out of 5 I think.  And i like basketball and think it helps the minds that are worried about our football program.  So dont hate on your own team.  Stay true to your colors and team,  GO VOLS!!!

FIRE Fake-Pearl NOW!

Fake-Pearl is NO gem-he is a cheat, covered up his cheating and then lied about it. He should have been FIRED immediately by another loser-Hamilton. As a Tenn grad,I am embarrassed by the direction of men's programs at Tenn. Time will prove I am correct-USC like sanctions are inevitable.  This year will be the last year of good Tennessee men's basketball team. Top level recruits will have to be stupid or convicts to attend Tennessee with no post season play possibilities.

CUSEYOURSELF, You have lost your mind if you think TN won't be in the NCAA Tournament.
Shows that you have no knowledge of college basketball and can't evaluate talent if it sat on your face and wiggled.

Bye Bye BP

Bruce Pearl got caught lying to the NCAA. He is a repeat offender having broken the same rules at UMW.

Now Pearl gets beat by Indianapolis - that's the Greyhounds not the Pacers.

It's time Tennessee cuts their losses and gets rid of this cheater & loser.

And NCCA probation is coming for UT football, basketball and baseball.

Go Vols!
