The Poll Attacks

One guy left Villanova and Michigan State off his ballot but put Purdue and Virginia Tech in the top 20. Another guy ranked Villanova in the top 10 (that's reasonable) but left the undefeated team that just beat Villanova unranked (that's unreasonable). Silly AP voters, I tell you. They're the gift that keeps on giving during this holiday season.

Let's do the Poll Attacks!

(Details of AP ballots courtesy of

Associated Press poll: Michigan State and Villanova are both talented, and both only have one loss to a team ranked in the top 15 of the latest AP poll. The Spartans are 5-1 with a loss to No. 7 Connecticut by one possession, and they have a win over No. 23 Washington. The Wildcats are 5-1 with a loss to No. 13 Tennessee, and they've got a double-digit win over UCLA. So we can argue about whether Michigan State and Villanova belong in the top five or the top 10 or even the top 20, I guess. But there is no sensible way to leave either school off a Top 25 ballot.

And yet John Shinn from the Norman Transcript in Oklahoma left both off his AP ballot.

No Michigan State.

No Villanova.

But John has Purdue (no good wins and a double-digit loss to unranked Richmond) ranked 14th and two-loss Virginia Tech ranked 19th, which is three spots higher than the undefeated UNLV team that just beat Virginia Tech on a neutral court by 12. So to recap: Michigan State is 5-1 with a loss to the team ranked No. 8 (UConn) and a win over the team ranked No. 23 (Washington), and John decided that resume isn't worthy of being ranked. And Villanova is 5-1 with a lone loss to the team ranked No. 13 and a win over UCLA, and John decided that resume isn't worthy of being ranked, either. Meantime, Virginia Tech is 4-2 with double-digit losses to the teams ranked No. 5 and No. 24, but John somehow decided that resume is worthy of being ranked all the way up at No. 19, which, again, is three spots higher than the undefeated UNLV team that just beat Virginia Tech on a neutral court by 12. And he has Purdue at No. 14 with a 5-1 record featuring a double-digit loss to unranked Richmond.

Also ranked on John's ballot: North Carolina at No. 25.

So two-loss Virginia Tech and two-loss UNC are both on John's ballot.

But one-loss Michigan State and one-loss Villanova are both off John's ballot.

Perhaps he's just an ACC fan trapped in Big 12 country.

Who knows?

Another weird ballot involving Villanova belongs to Whitelaw Reid of the Daily Progress in Virginia. He has Villanova at No. 8 and Tennessee unranked despite the fact that UT is undefeated with a win over -- wait for it -- Villanova. Not sure how anybody could make sense of that. But this is the same guy who has Washington at No. 12 and Connecticut at No. 23 despite the fact that Washington has two losses and UConn is undefeated with wins over both of the schools (Kentucky and Michigan State) that beat -- wait for it -- Washington. So maybe making sense isn't a priority with good ol' Whitelaw.

Coaches poll: Nobody likes Temple more than I like Temple.

I had the Owls ranked in the top 15 in the preseason, and as high as No. 13 last week. But then they lost to California late Thursday and to Texas A&M on Sunday, and you just can't have a 3-2 team coming off losses to Cal and Texas A&M on your Top 25 ballot. But that's exactly what at least one coach -- and possibly multiple coaches -- did this week. Temple got five points in the coaches poll. That's five more than Texas A&M (5-1) or Cal (3-2) received, case you were wondering.

Great 2B, you're a moron. At this point, most teams dont have quality wins. We arent even in December yet! Arguing Syracuse's ranking is pointless. By the way, both Michigan and Georgia Tech show promise this year so do not write those wins off. You are a typical Tennessee homer. Vols are famous for a few big wins followed by bad losses. Voters know this, which is why Tennessee is not ranked higher. Whine all you want but its a fact. Syracuse has talent the voters recognize, even if they arent gelling fully yet. They havent lost so you cant fault them no matter how much you want to.

Hey Parrish, get a life, that is why we have polls and votes, DIFFERENT PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS , the world doesn't evolve around what you think.

The Poll Attacks

None of this matters. Early polls exist solely to have something to write about before the season presents us with the real stories (and champions). No one knows what injuries will occur, which unheard of players will step to the fore and which much-touted ones will miss a step. Sure, I read the polls and I have my own opinions but I look at it for what it is -- an exercise for the bored, the opinionated and the boosters. I love college hoops. The games themselves teach the pollsters that you just can't predict what's going to happen. it amuses me that this is a lesson we have to learn anew every year.

Good ole CUSEYOURSELF.  Might as well go ahead and move on buddy cause you make no sense at all.  Your just a Tennessee hater, that much I know.  And it doesnt matter to you who we beat, cause in your mind, we still suck.  Wrong loser.  Remember me??  haha.  Sure, since Tennessee beat Villanova for the NIT Pre-season championship, where they ran through other teams to get to play Nova, they shouldnt be ranked over Nova?  You are stupid, crazy, and obviously smoking something.  Until Villanova proves they are better, they shouldnt be in front of the VOLS.  Period.  But they still are, to your satisfaction.  My biggest issue with the polls is how your beloved Syracuse team is ranked so high.  Who have you guys beat?  Nobody.  Thats who.  Still, I wont say you guys suck, as im not arrogant or ignorant.  But #7?  No way. Ill agree with Gary somewhere around 20.  Put someone at #7 who has a proven win against someone.  Maybe the VOLS?  lol.  You wont like that huh. "Villanova is so much better than Tennessee".  What a load.  Did you watch that game.  The same trio of "super-stud-PG's" that scored 61 against UCLA, got shut down to 25 points against the VOLS.  And main man Corey Fisher, 3 points.  And i think he is rated as one of the best guards in the country.  Remember, the guy that scored 105 points in a summer game last yr.  Yeah.  So go CUSEYOURSELF.  Head on out.  Grab your box of tissues and your verizon chocolate phone that you write these posts on and head to mommas house.  Or go back to the baby boards talkin about the big 5 of Cuse.  Once Nova beats you guys, you will have to shut your pipehole or stuff something into it.  Gypsy.  I agree with Tiger high on the notion that kansas had proven to beat someone last yr heading into the tourney.  UCONN should be up there where they are.  Cause they have officially played and beat 2 QUALITY teams.  Nuff said, although it was quite a bit.  GO VOLS!!!

Kansas/Northern Iowa isn't a very good analogy for making your point. Kansas had beaten several ranked teams through the year. Villanova has beaten no ranked team at this point. Northern Iowa also wasn't undefeated...Tennessee is...and they didn't just beat Nova by a bucket or two...they beat them by ten points. I hate defending Tennessee but they really should be ranked if Nova is and should be ahead of them. If it were later in the year and Nova had proven themselves against ranked teams I could agree with you...but it's not and they haven't.

The Poll Attacks

If a guy has Villanova ranked 5th in the preseason and Tennessee unranked just because Tennessee beat Nova doesn't mean they automatically jump over Villanova in the polls.

Just because Northern Iowa beat Kansas last season doesn't mean they were a better team. The guy who ranked this obviously thinks Villanova is a better team then Tennessee and I completely agree. Tennessee at this point should be ranked but I wouldnt go nuts if they're not ahead of Villanova.

Go Harrison Barnes Gary...

You ranked Uconn 4th in the country. That is all...
