Memphis' Witherspoon out five weeks

Wesley Witherspoon is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday for a meniscal tear in his right knee.

The Memphis forward is expected to miss five weeks while rehabbing.

He should return in mid-January.

"This is a tough break for Wesley, because at the time of the injury, he was carrying us in those first five games," said Memphis coach Josh Pastner "Since that injury, we've been holding him out of practices, and we've limited his time in gameday shoot-arounds. I'm confident, though, that he'll bounce back quickly and be ready to go when he returns. As for the team, we will continue to prepare and move forward with our schedule. None of our opponents are going to feel sorry for us because of this."

Pastner said Witherspoon suffered the injury Nov. 17 against Northwestern State but continued to play through it. The 6-foot-8 forward was averaging 13.0 points and 4.6 rebounds through eight games for the 13th-ranked Tigers, who are 7-1 and coming off a loss to No. 4 Kansas. Witherspoon had eight points and two rebounds in that game.

Memphis next plays Austin Peay on Thursday.

Don't get me wrong, Witherspoon is extremely talented, but I see this as a good thing for the Tigers. All we have been hearing for weeks now has been "Will Wesley become a good leader?" and so on. I am tired of it. You have to produce on the court. I value Wesley as a member of Tiger Nation and wish him well in his recovery. I also realize we will be much improved when he returns to the floor if he is able to integrate himself into what occurs while he is out. It is time for Will Barton to take the reigns as the on floor leader. He does however need to play with a little more control. These guys have the potential to be great. Go Tigers!

I know and trust my sources.  He's had a bum knee, but there's more to it than than just his physical limitations.  Stay tuned, tigergreg.  More is likely to come out as time goes on.  Everything has not been what you might believe.

MAYBE Coleman will get his minutes and play better. As much as the team needs Spoon, they need Coleman to play and contribute. Currently he is looking over his shoulder after every play to see if he is headed back to the bench. Spoon does not need to play the 4 anyway. He is not strong enough. The  team needs to focus on scoring in the paint and rebounding. If this crew is to be succesful, Coleman and Black need to be on the floor together. There is no excuse for playing 3 guards,1 smaller forward and an undersized center - we are getting killed on the boards. This is a very unique opportunity for the team to get better, and add a very good player a month later. Spoon should come back at the 3, and the team would be better off for it.

rumor is that wesley hadn't been the positive role model he needed to be.

That's why you shouldn't listen to rumors, fling.

WW's been playing with a hurt knee and the only excuse that you can come up with is that he needs to take time off to get his on right?

Nice insight. Yell

a blessing in disguise.  gives the freshmen and carmouche a chance to step up and develop their own identity.  rumor is that wesley hadn't been the positive role model he needed to be.  wesley needs time to get his head on right and come back with a better team-oriented attitude.

Honestly, as a VOLS fan, Im kinda upset.  Id like to see a competitive game when we play in a few weeks.  I think that guy missing is going to hurt you guys.  Oh well, better chance for the VOLS to win.  Good luck filling his spot, hopefully you wont do too bad given you dont have too many tough games besides tennessee and georgetown coming up  GO VOLS!!
