UK can shoot its way to Final Four

Kentucky doesn't have five first-round picks on this team.

Three, probably.

But definitely not five.

So by that measuring stick this season's Kentucky team isn't nearly as talented as last season's Kentucky team, and yet I won't be surprised if this season's Kentucky team goes farther than last season's Kentucky team, which is to say all the way to the Final Four. They're young, sure, but they play with a unique level of maturity. Also:
  1. They're really athletic.
  2. They can really guard.
  3. They can really shoot.
(I like No. 3 the most.)

John Calipari has had four teams earn No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament.

They were:
  • UMass (1995-96)
  • Memphis (2005-06)
  • Memphis (2007-08)
  • Kentucky (2009-10)
Two of those teams made the Final Four (although both appearances were later vacated) and two did not, and the two that didn't lost in similar fashion, i.e., as favorites who couldn't make a gosh darn jumpshot. The 2005-06 Tigers shot 35 percent from 3-point range on the season and lost 50-45 to UCLA in the Elite Eight because they finished 2-of-17 from beyond the arc. The 2009-10 Wildcats shot 33 percent from 3-point range on the season and lost 73-66 to West Virginia in the Elite Eight because they finished 4-of-32 from beyond the arc. In other words, Calipari's two No. 1 seeds that lost in the Elite Eight lost because they shot just 12 percent on 3-pointers in Elite Eight games, which is both an astounding statistic and something I can't see happening to his latest dynamic team that looked great in Friday's 78-63 win at Louisville.

The Wildcats aren't the nation's best 3-point shooting team.

But they're in the top 20.

Kentucky is shooting 40.9 percent from 3-point range as a team and has two guards -- Doron Lamb (54.9 percent) and Darius Miller (47.4 percent) -- making about 50 percent of their 3-point attempts; Brandon Knight (38.3 percent) and DeAndre Liggins (36.1 percent) provide two more capable shotmakers. So is this the type of team that's going to miss 88 percent of its 3-point attempts in an important game? No, I don't think it is. And that's why it might be wise to call the Wildcats the SEC favorite and add them to the list of serious Final Four candidates.

They won't have five first first-round draft picks like last season's team.

I assure you of that.

But the less-talented Wildcats might be good enough to play for a national title, regardless.

UK can shoot its way to Final Four

I love this voodoo logic some are using to rule out the Cats.  You know I discovered just last week that if I turned my head and spit at just the point the ball is tossed up to start the game that either team I want to win will win.  I'm thinking about marketing this as a product for all major college teams.  But I could start out with an introductory offer just to get myself established.   So if any of you guys want a win really, really bad just send me a postal money order for $500 and I'll make sure it happens.  It works.  Really!  I've seen it happen.  You can amaze your friends by having some loser team like Drexel beat Lousiville.  Oh wait.  Bad example.  But you get the idea.

Five'd and fave'd KingGhidora! Still laughing at the turn my head and spit just as the ball is tossed....That's great stuff!! Really, I don't care who you are unless maybe you're a jaded red pigeon. Set that paypal account up, you're about to become a rich man!

At least people had heard of Drexel.  I thought GW was an investment firm and I didnt even know San Diego had a college or a team.

You know, I really don't understand the need of some people to come on a public message board and explain to everyone how ignorant they are.

jestep123 (at least you can count to 3) try that little wizard called "google".  It'll quicly tell you that most people in college basketball, associate "GW" with George Washington not Gardiner-Webb (G-W).  You could then kill two birds of ignorance with one stone.

Just one last observation...you do know that San Diego is a city , right?  Just trying to understand the breadth and width of your ignorance.

To paraphrase ol' Ron White, "The next time you feel a need to broadcast your ignorance...just let it go."

UK can shoot its way to Final Four

We all have our Drexel's now and again.  The supposed second best team in the SEC in TN had 3 of them in a row a couple weeks ago.  (Man that conference is bad).  A certain other program couldnt get passed powerhouse Gardner Webb or San Diego among others a few years ago.

At least people had heard of Drexel.  I thought GW was an investment firm and I didnt even know San Diego had a college or a team.

UK can shoot its way to Final Four

Yeah im not an excuse maker but I just wish we could have seen both teams healthy.  Last year's Cats were better and Cards were worse, that game was in Rupp and it was closer.  Why?  Because UL was at least healthy.  Depth is a huge part of Pitino's style and injuries really derail that.  To not even acknowledge that in the article is misleading and poor journalism in my mind.  If UK was down three guys and UL beat them, I gaurantee it would be mentioned.  Hed say "UL won but UK was down three guys so I still dont know if I buy in."  LOL

I am sorry but to put UK in the Final Four or give a team that is 7 deep (are they even that deep) National Title consideration off of a win against an injury riddled team that was ranked below them is just poor judgement and just shows that Parrish has a facisnation with Cal.

UK can shoot its way to Final Four

I am officially done with this guy for two reasons.

A) He has a major thing for a guy who has never won anything in Calipari because he used to live in the same city he coached in.  What a groupie.

B) Earlier today he said he still wasnt sold on Louisville but less than two weeks ago he said the same thing and that he would buy into

the Cards if the beat UNLV which they did, handly.  Louisville apprarently needs to be undefeated for him to "buy in".

Gary, you do know UL was nowhere near 100% right?  No excuses UK was the better team today but this game is a lot closer if both sides are fully healthy dont you think?

So if the game would have been closer if UL had been healthy but your not ready to buy into Louisville how does this win all of a sudden make them a Final Four contender?

It literally makes me sick to read this guys stuff.

UK can shoot its way to Final Four

Oh, I thought it was poor play and bad match-ups that got Tennessee and Illinois! How could I be so stupid to not see that it was clearly Parrish that screwed them over. Cats have an outside shot at the Four, for sure if they shoot like this.

UK can shoot its way to Final Four

This should be the ultimate kiss of death for the Cats, Parrish says they will go to the Final 4, yeah right.  They are now on the kiss of death list with Illinois and Tennessee.  Sorry UK fans.  But hey, at least the SEC West has all mid-major type basketball programs right now, so your win total will still be high.
