The record can be attributed to the quality of the team on one level and to the advantageous schedule on another, and we'll all know at a later date what deserves more of the credit. You can do a lot of things in college basketball, but fake your way through the Big East isn't one of them. So Syracuse will either prove itself as a legitimate top five team or not in due time. But for now, all I know is this: The Orange are 15-0.

We can debate why.

But we can't debate that.

No, Syracuse hasn't gone on the road and handled a quality opponent (or even played a true road game). But Saturday's 70-58 victory over Notre Dame at the Carrier Dome means Jim Boeheim's team now owns wins over the schools ranked 15th (Notre Dame) and 20th (Michigan State) in the latest Associated Press poll, and the Orange haven't lost to a school currently ranked outside of the top 20, which isn't the case for No. 6 Pittsburgh, No. 8 Villanova, No. 9 Georgetown, No. 11 Kentucky, No. 12 Purdue, No. 13 Texas, No. 14 Minnesota, No. 16 BYU, No. 17 Kansas State and No. 18 Texas A&M. In other words, it's still hard to tell if the Orange are great, but it's already clear they're pretty darn good and better than expected.

And ranked appropriately.

(That's fair, right?)

Either way, I can't wait for Jan. 17.

That's when Syracuse plays Pittsburgh at the Peterson Events Center.

Syracuse will almost certainly enter 18-0; Pitt should be 17-1 or 16-2. The Big Monday showdown is this season's only scheduled game between the Big East powers. It could decide the league championship. More than anything, though, it'll give the Orange their first road game against a ranked opponent and provide context, one way or another, to this perfect record. Win at Pitt and any remaining doubters can be called haters. Lose at Pitt and what happens over the subsequent two weeks in games against Villanova (home), Marquette (road) and Connecticut (road) will be telling.

Like I said, everything will sort itself out in due time.

But what's important now is that Syracuse is 15-0 overall, 2-0 in the Big East.

Is that the start of something big?

Honestly, who knows?

But I do know this: It's a helluva start.

I agree, although I did pick them to 18-0. The Johnnies are no push over and Cincy, although untested will in all liklihood be undefeated and ready to prove something. Honestly, if the Cuse should win these games and then beat Pitt on its home court, SU should be number 1 in the polls and jump no matter who is in front of them.

If Syracuse beats Pitt (in Pitt) don't you think they should be #1, considering Pit is 8-0 at home against top 5 teams?

Please bump Morvil to superstar. How can Pennish write this after a pretty decent beating of the team he said they would get beat by.  Let's be honest; although it was close in the first half there wasn't really a point where SU fans were worried.  Seemed pretty much par for the course.  Be careful and keep it close the first half; go in at halftime, regroup and pull away.  Everything will sort itself out in due time? Seriously Pennish?  They are 15-0 with a win against a #7 at the time; and no this was not at home.  Also they did just beat #15; I am not wasting the time to look it up; but can anyone tell me if any other team has a more impressive resume? Sounds like things are pretty well sorted out!

Disrespect to SU similar to 2003

Parrish will not give Syracuse any credit the whole year. This appears to be familiar. Everytime they beat a good team there will be some reason that they will need to validate themselves. For the last few weeks Parrish was convinced theat Notre Dame would win this game. Same as Michigan State, and any other team that they play. If they beat Pitt a new excuse will arise. My advice to SU fans is to enjoy this guy. How much crow can one guy eat. This SU team is good and will only get better. Also - I thought that SU was 5-6 hours from NYC? Was that UK game against the Cards a home game? Any team that plays within 5 hours of home should get hammered the way SU does. Playing in the ACC - I guess Duke plays all home game. Since all of those campuses are within a 5-6 hour commute. A number of those schools are within an hour. What apply to SU must then be applied to all. Its also funny that teams such as UConn, Pitt and Nova continue to get props even though its clear that they are all one dimensional, guard oriented teams.. SU is by far the most balanced team in the league. Enough of the excuses and acknowledge that this is a really good team. We will see in March.

Some very guarded compliments for Syracuse.  Even though Gary didn't rank them in the pre-season, the writers and coaches did, so while they may not have looked impressive in their early games, they did take care of business.  To this point Pitt has not played a true road game either, but apparently they can be forgiven because they were highly ranked in the preseason.  It will be interesting to see if Gary decides Pitt's win over UConn is enough to rank them ahead of SU this week.

Always the same story

Everyone always bashes Syracuse for "not leaving New York".

So Duke travels to Oregon and UNC-Greensboro and this makes them #1 ?

And Kansas goes to Berkeley and that makes all the difference?

I'm tired of this.  Let Duke, Kansas, and Ohio State play the year-to-year punishing schedule of the Big East.

Finally give Boeheim credit.

"The record can be attributed to the quality of the team on one level and to the advantageous schedule on another"....

Sorry, Gary, even though I enjoy your reporting and you are a must read guy with me, I don't buy the advantageous schedule crapola.
1st of all regrdless of the numbers of SU fans in NYC it is not a home game in a City 6-7 hours away.  Going to NJ is leaving New York State.

The same measures should be applied to all the big teams and it debunks your easy schedule theory. We beat then #8 rated Michigan and have wins over an injured NC State and Georgia Tech from bigger conferences.  Most recently we handled #15 Notre Dame by 12 even though many writers including you said we couldn't beat. Something about senior , leader ship, 3 point shooting SU couldn't handle.

As far as your advantageous schedule is concerned

#1 Duke's amazingly hard schedule is as follows At home Princeton, Miami (OH), Colgate,  Marquette, Then #4 Kansas St, Oregon, Then# 6 Michigan, Butler, Bradley, St Loius, Elon and away at UNC Greensboro.  Not to mention the ACC regular season can' hold a candle to the BE regular season.

#2 Ohio St .... home  NC A&T, Then#10 Florida, NC Wilmington, Morehead st, Away at Florida St, IUPUI, Western Carolina, Florida Gulf Coast, South Carolina, Oakland, Tennessee.-Martin and NC Ashville.....killer bball programs I guess.

#3 Kansas  home Longwood,Valporaiso, N Texas, Texas A&M-CC,Ohio, Arizona, UCLA, then14 Memphis, Colorado St, USC, At California, Texas-Arlington, Miami (OH) UMKC

Mostly big time teams play very easy schedules, at home and none of the aforementioned teams has to runt he BE gauntlet.

If you are going to be a band wagon guy and say SU plays easy and at home, then include the rest of the top ten, compare schedules and tell me with a straight face SU has an advantageous schedule.   They all do it,  except IZZO and how is that working out.

Respectfully ,

A Basketball fan

And who has DUKE played? Who and where??????? If you want to belittle the MSU win, (who you made sure you listed as 20th instead of 7th when they played) what does this say for DUKE? Where is the story on the pathetic schedule they have played and will play for the rest of the year? Heck, they had all they could handle with Marquette in MO. Where's their story GP? Next on the list is OSU? Who the heck have they played? Where is their story Gary? While I'm on a roll, KS looks like they want out of the Big 12 and into the PAC 10, and they haven't played anyone that tuff, and what, 1 road game vs. Cal (who lost to Cal-Poly at home and Hartford!).

Where are their stories GP? Why the negative overtone. SU has played teams like Drexel, NIU, Detroit, Michigan, NCST, GT, Iona, MSU, Prov, and ND and has one of the highest RPI's by your standards (CBS) in the country, Well over DUKE or OSU. Considering the schedule you have to face in the BE, this was not a cupcake schedule. So they play at home or nuetral sites, well thats because they bring in the money GP, in NY in NJ, the Cuse is right up there with KY when it comes to traveling to see their team. And frankly, sine when is 300 miles from home at a nuetral site a home game? (250 for NY)

The teams ahead of SU are only there because you analyst put them there, not because they have earned that spot. If it was judged on play, Syracuse would be ahead of all these teams you mention. I am sure JB doesn't mind (even though the CBS poll on best coaches snubbed him out) being under rated, he doesn't mind at all.
