MSU's Lucious dismissed for rest of season

Michigan State junior Korie Lucious has been dismissed from the Spartans basketball team for the remainder of the season, coach Tom Izzo announced late Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, Korie Lucious displayed conduct detrimental to the program," Izzo said. "My focus is on this team for the remainder of the season.”

It's unclear whether Lucious might be allowed to return next season.

He, like Izzo, released a statement Tuesday night.

“I didn’t live up to the standards of the program," Lucious said. "Unfortunately, I let my teammates, my coaches, and myself down, and wish them the best for the rest of the season."

Lucious was averaging 6.5 points and 4.1 assists for the 25th-ranked Spartans.

Michigan State plays Michigan on Thursday at the Breslin Center.

MSU's Lucious dismissed for rest of season

The only way that Izzo is leaving MSU is for the NBA. And he has already turned down 2 offers over his career from the Knicks and Cavs. In terms of success, Izzo has been to 6 final fours and 2 National Championships (1 win) over the past 11 seasons. The only coach that I would consider to be more successful is Coach K, who has been to 4 Final Fours and won 2 National Championships over that same stretch.

Izzo has stated over and over that is happy at MSU. He gets to build the roster that he wants. He doesn't have anybody looking over his shoulder. And East Lansing is a great area to live. The atmosphere is amazing.

I can tell you that Izzo will not leave because he had to discipline a player once in a well. And to Lucious' credit, he didn't lash out at Izzo over the media like some overgrown, overpaid NBA players would do. That, I believe, is a testament to the character of the MSU Basketball Program.

Any chance Izzo clears out after this year? I don't think so. He is probably the #2 most successful coach in college basketball over the last five or six years. I'd, unfortunately, still have to put Roy Williams up there because 2 championships in 5 years is a helluva accomplishment, even with the last season and a half looking rough. If Izzo were to consider leaving, I think Chapel Hill would be interested. There is obviously something going on in Chapel Hill and the coach is usually the guy that the proverbial poop falls back on during tough times.

One player can ruin a team and state is looking really average right now. If dumping Korie Lucious can bring them together maybe they can still make the tourney. Michigan State and the NCAA's belong together.

What Tom Izzo has done for their program is nothing short of fantastic and it wouldn't surprise me (or anyone for that matter) if he rights the ship just in time to make another deep run come March.

everyone needs to relax, its not like he was kicked off the team for missing a practice he probably failed a drug test or something of that nature from his DUI probabtion earlier in the season. Izzo wouldnt kick someone off the team for going through a rough stretch. For those who think this is a good thing obviously dont know jack about basketball becuase this means that Kebler and Thornton will get more PT which is never a good thing. Just have to hope that Appling and more importantly Payne can step it up so Green can move back to playing a 3 while you have lucas, summers, and appling rotating as your guards. ROGER THAT

This can't be good for Izzo's recruiting. Looks like he's lost the team, makes bad recruiting decisions, then acts "hard-ass" with his players. Who want to come play for MSU BBALL? He already has trouble recruiting post players and the ones he did aren't worth a diddle. This is not a one-season issue. I think it dribbles into the future too.

I can't count the number of times I have been watching games this year, and as a play developed I sat up in my chair and yelled at the TV, "no Korie, no! Right after that he generated a dumb shot, a stupid pass, a dribble off the foot or a defensive breakdown. For the good of the team, he needed some time off to get his head straight.

and... Izzo should have left when he had the chance to coach Lebron.

Let's not get too crazy here. Izzo never had the chance to coach LeBron James. LeBron was never going to stay in Cleveland and Izzo would have been stuck with the same embarrassment that Byron Scott is facing right now.

Thank God. Now MSU will only turn over the ball 20 times a game instead of 30.
