The Poll Attacks

You want to know why more than half of the AP voters have Duke outside of the top five?

Because that's where the Blue Devils belong.

You want to know why one AP voter has Duke inside of the top two?

Because ... I have no idea.

But I appreciate Ron Morris doing it because it makes for an easy Poll Attacks.

Associated Press poll: Where would you rank a team that's A) suffered two losses to currently unranked teams, B) beaten zero currently ranked teams, C) gone 2-2 against four unranked teams in true road games, and D) been without its best player since early December?

If your name is Ron Morris, you'd rank that team second.

You'd be crazy, of course.

But that's what you'd do.

Because that's what Ron did.

(You can click this link see for yourself thanks to PollSpeak.com)

Granted, this is better than last week, when Ron was the lone AP voter who had Duke ahead of Ohio State. But it's still wrong because the Blue Devils' resume wasn't worthy of a No. 2 ranking last week, and it sure isn't worthy of No. 2 ranking after Sunday's blowout loss at St. Johns. To prove this, let's compare the bodies of work of the school Ron has No. 2 (Duke) and the school I have No. 2 (Pittsburgh).

----- Duke -----

Record: 19-2
Wins over currently ranked teams: 0
Losses to currently unranked teams: 2 (Florida State, St. John's)
Losses to currently ranked teams: 0

----- Pitt -----

Record: 20-2
Wins over currently ranked teams: 4 (No. 3 Texas, No. 6 Connecticut, No. 13 Georgetown, No. 17 Syracuse)
Losses to currently unranked teams: 1 (Tennessee)
Losses to currently ranked teams: 1 (No. 9 Notre Dame)

Now allow me to recap: Pitt has at least four wins better than any win Duke possesses, and Pitt has only one loss to a currently unranked team whereas Duke has two. So the Panthers have more wins than Duke, better wins than Duke and two losses that aren't as bad as Duke's two losses. And yet Ron has Duke No. 2 and Pittsburgh No. 4. I bet you a briefcase full of Charlie Sheen's coke that he couldn't possibly defend that order with anything of substance.

Coaches poll: We might find out in March that Utah State is the next Butler or George Mason or whatever, at which point this version of the Poll Attacks will look stupid. But for now the coaches ranking the Aggies 21st is what looks stupid.

What's it based on?

A bunch of bad victories?

The Aggies have played two legitimate basketball teams (BYU and Georgetown) and lost both games by an average of 11.5 points. Beyond that, they haven't done much of note. All 20 of their wins are against teams ranked outside of the Top 100 of the latest RPI, meaning Utah State is 0-2 against the Top 100 and 20-0 against teams outside of the Top 100. Congratulations, I guess. But where I'm from, that's not good enough. You want to be ranked, beat somebody. Because beating a bunch of nobodies doesn't do much for me. Again, if Utah State proves me wrong in March, I'll apologize. But for now the Aggies are just a team stacking wins against weak competition after losing their only two games against good competition.

The Poll Attacks

Parrish's unhealthy obsession with Duke is rivaled only by Keith Oberman's obsession with Sarah Palin.  As a Duke fan I agree wholeheartedly that they should be ranked around 10 or 12, but that's not the point.  The point is with everything else going on in College BB, Parrish has yet again let his neurotic fixation on Duke manipulate and control his shrivled mind.

The Poll Attacks

It is also a mistake to not include the Big 12 as one of the best BBall leagues in the country.  I won't argue Big East or Big ten.  but SEC?  they are way down on the Bball list.  The Big 12 has the best interleague record in the country.  They have the third best RPI.  Surly you do not believe that the SEC is better than the Big 12.

Oh well, wait till March.  Then the Big East will flame out early.  (based on the last few yrs)  and the SEC will mostly be a no show.

But March is fun, and this is why.  Good luck to all.  May the best team be standing in April.

The Poll Attacks

I am A Big Ten Fan And A life time Ohio State fan. I will say the Big East is better with no problem. I would say that has been the case for some time now one reason why is they have more teams but that is not the only reason why . But when you look at history over the last 25 years there have been only 4 teams from the big east that have won the National Championship. In those 25 years there have been so many teams from each conference that have had 1 or 2 teams good enough to win it all. As you can see that has not happened. The reason why is because basketball is a sport and any sports fan like me who has watched sports for over 40 years knows that on any given day a bad team can beat a very good team.  Last year I did not think Duke was good enough to win it all and look at what happened. Many years the best team does not win the Chamionship because as I mentioned before on any given day anybody can beat anybody. I would say good luck Duke but since My Ohio State team is so good this year I can't.  I do though have a lot of respect for Duke and it's basketball program.

The Poll Attacks

I see all these people arguing over "bla bla hasnt played anybody" or "bla bla lost to this unranked team" or "who has bla bla played."

Yall can argue all you want about how Duke hasnt beaten anybody in the top 25 and that they lost to fsu and st johns. or that kansas hasnt beaten anybody.  or that all the big east teams only beat each other.  or that the sec is weak.  no team really stands out as an all out favorite.  a lot of teams are starting to more and more have superstars like fredette and kemba walker.... where a team like a seton hall (with hazell) can beat any team in the country (ie hazell gets hot and carries them) yet can lose to any team in the country when hazell (their best scorer) goes cold on any given night.  yall can downplay that duke lost to teams like st johns when this year ANY TEAM would have trouble going to ANY big east teams home and playing them.  Duke may be without their star player (freshman) but they also didnt lose much from last eyars squad which won the whole thing.  the same "thing" that all teams are trying to win again this year.  and you can knock teams like kansas and claim they havent played anyone.... when no matter how you look at it... chances are if they played your team....then your team would be catching some Ls right now.  this years top 25 is so close and so many teams can beat so many teams that top 25 isnt  really gonna matter.  did you see how many teams lost to teams ranked below them last week alone?  does this make them better?  not even close.  is st johns better than duke?  probably not?  but on that day and in new york city they were.  im a syracuse fan?  after losing 4 straight do i think they deserve to be even in the top 25?  probably not.  but you def cant knock the big east, theyve been beating everyone in out on conference games for a while now.  duke may have played 2 teams and lost... but this is the same squad that won the whole thing last year and as for kansas.... "who have they played?"  does it matter?  cause theyve beaten those said teams.  same goes with many.  teams like byu, texas, uconn, nova, pitt, ohio st.... those teams can beat anyone on any given night including each other.  remember of all the teams that make the tourney.... only 1 ends on a winning streak.  teams are bound for losses.  so... not only should u not care about whos in the top 25 right now.... but def dont care about what Parrish thinks.... you put his brain in a birds body and the bird would fly backwards.  he disagrees just to stir up arguments, its why he gets paid.... to write retardedly inaccurate articles and the more responses the more of a success he thinks he is cause more and more people responded.  thats my case and im sticking to it.  go big east.  and... syracuse... my prayers r with u.  :P

The Poll Attacks

Gary, I am curious about the poll on Sportsline's front page. Which is the best basketball conference: Big East, Big Ten, or SEC?

Uhhh... Ok with the first two, but the SEC? I count 1 team in the top 25... the Big 12 by contrast has 2 in the top 3, two other teams in the top 25, and at least 3-5 more tournament teams.

I realize CBS wants to promote "THE SEC ON CBS" but c'mon, man!

Pollsters in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

The Poll Attacks

I somewhat agree with the rankings, but as for the big east, why don't we just rank the whole division and base the top 25 off them? It does'nt matter who or how many losses each team may have, they never seem to impact any Big East team, WHY?
