Spartans projected to have losing league record

Posted on: February 3, 2011 12:19 pm

I've got a Michigan State column coming up on the site.

I'll Tweet it when it's ready.

But for now, know this about the Spartans' 72-52 loss at Iowa late Wednesday: It means Michigan State is 5-5 in the Big Ten and now projected (at KenPom.com) to finish with a losing league record for the first time ever under Tom Izzo. Such would likely have Michigan State missing the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1997 -- the same year Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan took UW–Platteville to the second round of the Division III tournament.

Michigan State plays Ryan's Badgers on Sunday.

Spartans projected to have losing league record

 - well said. I see you're not casual with your college basketball fandom. Nothing wrong with that! And I agree with you. Seriously, what the hell happened? These are not teams that were sitting on the fringes of the top 25. MSU was ranked 2nd. K-State was 8th. Baylor and Tennessee were both (I believe) top ten. And don't forget Syracuse, who was not ranked that highly in the preseason but rose to 2nd and then promptly lost four in a row. There have also been a bunch of near misses. OSU almost lost to Northwestern and Michigan. Kansas and 'Cuse (before they stunk) also nearly gagged one away against Michigan. St. Johns crushed Duke, and FSU pulled the semi-annual Duke upset as well. It's a weird season.

I agree that pre season picks are a crap shoot, but this year has been unlike any other in recent history. You've got at least 6 or 7 pre season Top 25 teams, MSU, KST, Gonzaga, Memphis, Baylor, Butler, VT, that will have to have two great months to be dancing. I'm predicting that more than 5 of those teams will be NIT bound. Throw in Temple and Tennesse and you might have the worst pre season top 25 in history.  How can this happen in the age of the internet and with every writer worth his salt trying to predict the college basketball season based on what he has learned over years?

I totally agree about the #2 and #3 teams in the preseason poll! Now as already stated, the preseason polls are a crap-shoot, and while some of these teams can still turn things around, let me remind you of several other preseason rankings this year:
Gonzaga #12, Baylor #14, Illinois (now hanging on to credibility by a thread with 7 losses) #16, Butler #18, Memphis #19, and Tennessee #20.  I do still think, especially with the expanded field, that several of those team will ultimately make the tournament, but still that is crazy how off the poll may have been early on.  Heck even NC State was on several people's ballot in the preseason! Just goes to show that you should never pay too much into preseason rankings!

So barring conference tournament victories, it now seems likely that Michigan State (AP preseason No. 2) AND Kansas State (AP Preseason No. 3) will miss the tournament. I know that preseason polls are a bit of a crapshoot, but I can't remember a collective pair of collapses as great as this one.
