Report: Drew leaving UNC

Posted on: February 4, 2011 11:08 am

North Carolina point guard Larry Drew II has left the Tar Heels and will transfer out of the program, ESPN.com's Pat Forde reported Friday morning.

Drew has been a target of criticism since succeeding Ty Lawson as UNC's point guard. He led the Tar Heels to the NIT last season and was the most obvious problem for their disappointing start this season. The 6-foot-2 junior lost his starting job to freshman Kendall Marshall last month. North Carolina was 12-5 with Drew as the starter this season. The Tar Heels are 4-0 since turning to Marshall.

Drew is the son of Atlanta Hawks coach Larry Drew.

North Carolina plays Florida State on Sunday.

Dimpled Balls your statements mean nothing.  You thought the Falcons would destroy the Packers and now they won the Super Bowl.

What Championship are you referring to?  I hope you don't mean the NCAA Championship.  You won't even win the ACC Championship this year.  Maybe the NIT.  Oh wait, you couldn't even win that last year.  My apologies for bringing that up

Wow DukeBBfan, that was really insightful.  It's always a pleasure to see the Dookies, or in your case, a Dookie wannabe, checking out Tar Heel headlines. Next Wednesday will be a treat for Tar Heel fans as ALL of the pressure will be on Coach K.  The Heels are young and will be fired up to once again take over Cameron following last year's aberration.  Also, congrats on winning the Championship last year during one of the lowest overall team talent pool seasons in Tournament history.  Can you imagine the 2010 Duke team trying to hang with the 2009 Tar Heels?  Ha ha!

Aside from basketball, which Drew is a backup on any division 1 program (despite what Drew II and his dad think), it's really sad that he's wasting an opportunity to get a great education from a superb academic institution.  I guess when you grow up with a silver spoon and have a dad who expects his kid to have entitlement, a selfish move like this is not so unusual.  His actions completely confirm what most fans fans thought regarding Drew's commitment and teamwork.  Without question, the worst point guard in Tar Heel history.  Good riddance.

My friend. Drew was the opposite of competent or even relevant. If you didnt cringe everytime he went in or touched the ball you have a stomach made of nails.  And our freshmen have been playing at a level that had they been there all year, Drew would have never seen the floor. In addition now we have another scholarship to offer. We can find  Drew "Doo" off the street.

I kinda hope what you're saying isn't true tarheeltatum.  That'd be pretty sad if it's his parents who're influencing Drew's decision.  Wonder if we'll ever find out the whole story.

The man called Carolina faithful "spoiled" last year because he sucked and couldnt carry his own jock none the less the torch of the tradition he stumbled into.  Furthermore, we are already better with his sorry ass off the team.  Very few players for the Tarheels have frustrated me more than this loser.  Good riddens, the only thing I would change is Kick his ass out the door and let it hit him on the way out.  GO HEELS!!!

I'm reading that BC was his last game. I'm led to believe this is bigger than starting or basketball for that matter because it makes no sense for any player to leave mid season...he'd lose playing time through march and another full season.

Regardless to what ppl might think this does hurt...A LOT. Drew was a bigger spark off the bench than he was from jumpball. It means we're officially back down to one true point until 2012 and Strickland doesnt exactly instill confidence running the point...never has. We may have the depth and I'll enjoy seeing Bullock/McDonald get bigger minutes but if we dont have a competent point to get them the ball while Marshall gets his breather it could get ugly.
