Duke lands another elite recruit

Alex Murphy ended his recruitment Monday when he committed to Mike Krzyzewski's Duke Blue Devils.

"The whole process was fun, but, like everybody says, when you get it off your chest ... it’s just nice to know everything is set in stone," Murphy told Scout.com. "Like I said, it just feels good."

Murphy -- the younger brother of Florida's Erik Murphy -- is a standout in the Class of 2012, though it's possible he could graduate early and enroll at Duke in time for next season. The 6-foot-8 forward from Massachusetts told Scout.com that decision will be made later.

"I’m going to focus on my high school season and finish it out strong and hopefully win a championship," Murphy said. "The 2011 and 2012 thing will be something discussed with my family sometime in the spring and after the season."

Scout.com and Rivals.com both rank Murphy as the No. 11 prospect in the Class of 2012.

He accepted an offer from Duke while rejecting offers from Florida, North Carolina, Kansas and many others.

Duke lands another elite recruit

To be honest, as a duke fan, I think the guy might have a point.  K has been neglecting big men who can play the low post of late, and I totally agree that Zoubek was the difference last year.  He basically has 5 guys who all shoot facing the basket and nobody to play the defensive low post.  As far as Murphy being Pocius-- he could also be another Grant Hill-- who knows?  The point is that K is really not doing a good job of recruiting dominant centers.  It seems he'd rather play with two or three two guards mixed with two or three small fowards.  I find it very frustrating as a Duke fan.

Duke lands another elite recruit

edmedicine - You are correct, I am a Tar Heel (born and raised in Chapel Hill).  I've been following this rivalry since 1968 and have felt the pain witnessing Duke win 45 times, and the ultimate pleasure of watching the Heels win 65.  If you think I don't know a thing or two about the guys who've had the luxury of gracing both uniforms, the ones who got away, and the ones who flaked out, you are mistaken. Murphy's a good high school player, good kid, but hasn't stepped on the hardwood in the ACC.  I certainly didn't send out second coming messages on Barnes last year, and you might want to cool your jets on Murphy as well.  There is one thing I'm certain of, tomorrow night will be one heck of a game that could very well go to the Tar Heels.  Sit back and enjoy... Go Heels!

Duke lands another elite recruit

Truly great college teams have key role players...not all 5 star recruits turn out to be great college players...but most can learn to become role players.  See Lance Thomas, and Brian Zoubeck of last year's team.  This kid looks like the next Singler if you ask me, but its one thing to be great in HS, and another to be dominant in college.

It looks like Coach K is forgetting about the benefits of big-body recruits (Zoubek was the difference last year) and is once again focusing on a wing oriented player in Alex Murphy.  Yes, he is a good "High School" player, but he lacks 5 star athleticism and  he could very well end up being another Martynas Pocius.
wow.  not a big surprise to see this garbage coming from a tar heel fan.  i guess ol' roy wanted the next pocius too, seeing as how UNC offered murphy a scholly as well.  i wish i had time to count how many ways this assessment is completely incorrect.  last time i remembered, pocius was a shooting guard from overseas, not a 6'8" small forward who is ranked in the top 15 of his recruiting class.  i remember two other "wing oriented players lacking 5 star athleticism" coming out of high school named singler and dunleavy.  both of whom were on national championship teams.

seriously, with this pocius nonsense.  go away.

Chief why wouldn't you allow your kid a chance to make some good money? You make it apparent that you're not a Coach Cal fan, but if he recruited your son, you're saying you wouldn't let him into your house?? I'm not a Cal fan either, but if he recruited my son, I'd listen. As for your comment about one and done players not transitioning into the NBA as well as 2-3 year players that "found the transition much more smoother," I have to ask you to name a few. One and done should be, and hopefully will be repealed, sooner than later. Kids that don't belong in college, don't belong in college. They should be in the NBA if they are good enough. They shouldn't be in college for a year just to try out for the NBA. They should be allowed to go into the NBA. If they were, Coach Cal would have to do just that, Coach. If that happens, we'll see whether or not he can do that. Relying on one and done players hasn't proven successful yet so why worry about it? What ever happened to Michael Beasley? Wasn't he KState's best one and done? He also put KState on the map. The reason they were ranked so high in preseason polls.
