Doubt what's possible with Painter? Never again

I had Purdue ranked third in the preseason Top 25 (and one).

Then Robbie Hummel tore his ACL.

Then I dropped the Boilermakers into the 20s. And I never returned them to the top 10 -- not even when they started 15-1, mostly because they had, at the time, zero quality wins. Also worth noting: I could never get over the loss of Hummel because I've spent a lot of time throughout the past year talking to Matt Painter about Hummel as a player and a person, and I know how much that coach values that player. Thus, I couldn't help but put a premium on Hummel, too. But in properly valuing Hummel I made the mistake of inadvertently undervaluing Painter, and that's a mistake that was highlighted with Wednesday's 70-62 win over Wisconsin and again during Sunday's 76-63 victory over Ohio State.

Consider this my mea culpa.

I was wrong about what's possible for the Boilermakers.

I was wrong because -- though I've always properly loved E'Twaun Moore -- I misjudged how good JaJuan Johnson would be this season and underestimated what Painter could do with a roster robbed of its perceived most important player. After Hummel's injury, I figured the Boilermakers would finish fifth in the Big Ten. But after Sunday's win over Ohio State, they're 22-5 overall, 11-3 in the Big Ten and second in the league standings.

Purdue couldn't finish fifth now if it lost each of its remaining games.

So, yeah, I was wrong.

The Boilermakers would've been great with Hummel.

Everybody knew that.

But what I've learned this week is that they're pretty darn good without him, too -- perhaps Final Four good.

Gary, when you asked what should the Boilers be ranked at the beginning of the year...I said 15th, give or take.  I also said pre-season rankings mean little...it is more about how you finish and the tourney.

I also said it is rare to see the Boilers not play with heart/defense....

This past week has been very rewarding for the Boilers, but I will not say that "I told you so"

Fess Up Indydude99,

When Hummel went down, your heart dropped down like the rankings, but YOU like Purdue, recovered.

You can't expect these SportsCos to judge a team by anything other than thier biases. Thier having a DOWN YEAR because they lost thier Star was the Easy 2 Rite ByLine. The Hummel Supported (#1 Cheer Leader all season) ave made them actually have to work (as in Why aren't they losing without Hummel?!!).

The Big Ten Tournament is gonna be a BIG TICKET this year, Badgers, BoilerMakers and Buckeyes (the Big Ten's Killer B's) will put on a really good show.

Gary.  I reckon it takes a man to admit when he is wrong.  I, for one, will accept your apology.  Now let's see you bump Purdue to 8th or so this week.  Had everyone not punished Purdue after the Hummel loss, and we were allowed to be 4th or 5th, we would have retained our ranking through those losses similar to the way Georgetown has.

Not sure why all the hate coming Purdue's way.   We can only imagine what might have been if we had Hummel and Martin both this year.  Boiler Nation understands the Richmond loss will be used against us all year long.   Others in the top 15 have lost to powerhouses that aren't even bubble teams.

OSU should bounce back to #1 in all the polls with a total body of work......two losses against top 10 teams on the road.

For those of you complaining about Purdue and the fact they won't play all their games at Mackey, that is just stupid.  Nobody will play home games in the tournament and Purdue shows up on the road.  The OSU game was ridiculous because nobody in the country would have hung in there unless they also played their best game of the year.

OSU has a tendency to play down to their level of competition at times, but they have won those games.  The last I knew, that is all that mattered.  This isn't BCS and you don't get bonus or style points for blowing out lesser opponents.  All you have to do is win.  I like the chances of OSU, Purdue, and Wisconsin in the tournament.  And, oh year, you better hope MSU doesn't make the cut either.  I don't even like the idea of Purdue having to win at the Bresln Center when MSU is hungry for a win.

Can't everybody just give a small amount of love to the Big10.

Painter has done a fine job with these kids, but sorry to say that at this point, he isn't even half the coach Keady was.   But I like what he has done so far.  Perhaps Keady has even helped out a little bit to build the Johnnies.  Lavin was smart to bring him on board.

OSU would beat Purdue 9 out of 10 times on a neutral court.  Pathetic.  Wisconsin, OSU, and Purdue would far equally well against each other in a group of 10 on neutral courts.  Share the love buckeyes.  Boiler Nation has done nothing but give you props this year, so don't let it go to your heads.

Funny how my reply to johnny scott suddenly looks lame and while it now seems to be an answer to jsullinger00 it is no less valid. Hey tech, look into how I can be replying to a comment to one user just to see that users comments disapear replaced by another user's previous coments. Please.

No, johnny scott, the Buckeyes should not stay #2, they were 1&1 this week JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER TOP 4 TEAMS. Difference is tOSU lost On The Road to a Top 25 team and the others ALL LOST to UNRANKED TEAMS. They should reclaim the #1 spot if the voters are going week to week like they did last week explaining thier dropping of the Buckeyes.

Doesn't matter though, only rankings that count are for the Big Tourament and the Ohio State University is still looking at a #1 Seeding.

Love your passion for the Boilers and Painter, but "Painter is twice the coach Gene Keady ever was"  can't go with you on that.

Boiler Up!

Ohio State is 1-1 against Purdue this season, doesn't mean OSU is overrated. As for Purdue, they are good, but as a Final Four good that is questionable. Other than Moore and Johnson, who else is consistent? Jackson and Barlow may be decent, but is it enough to be Final Four good? If it breaks even, then maybe.

Good to see you're still trying to atone for your ridiculous statement from last year about Purdue being nowhere near as good as Kentucky/Texas/Kansas after the Boilers had lost their first game of the season.  That's like 5 fluff pieces on Purdue since then.  We forgive you.
