Remember when Duke was undefeated and rolling with Kyrie Irving at the point?

Back then, nobody debated No. 1.

Nobody really even debated who would be our eventual national champion.

But now look.

The Blue Devils just took their third loss -- a 64-60 loss at Virginia Tech late Saturday -- and are no longer a lock (or perhaps even a favorite) to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Heck, they're now just a North Carolina win over Maryland on Sunday from being in a first-place tie in the ACC with the Tar Heels, which means we're now just a week away from a Duke-UNC regular-season finale that'll likely determine the outright ACC champion.

That's Duke vs. UNC next Saturday.

In primetime.

Yes, I'll be there.

And yes, I'm looking forward to it.

But I never would've imagined three months ago that Duke would be without the No. 1 ranking, at risk of missing out on a No. 1 seed and in need of a strong final week just to secure a league title. Of course, Duke had Irving back then and UNC had Larry Drew II. Now both point guards are out of the picture, which is why the gap between the two programs closed.

Irving's toe injury made Duke worse.

Drew's decision to quit allowed UNC to get better.

Now the Blue Devils and Tar Heels are basically tied atop the ACC.

It must be a thrilling turn of events for Roy Williams ... and infuriating to Mike Krzyzewski.

Next Saturday is shaping up to be fun

the people posting on this blog realize that unc doesn't even HAVE to win this game to still win the ACC right? If we win 1 of the next 2 going into the Duke game on saturday we'll have the tiebreaker with the win against Duke. And after the way we played in cameron...and seeing the way that Duke plays away from cameron....i have very little doubt that we'd lose to them on a nuetral court in greensboro for the acc tournament. The irony is....before the season started and we hadn't done a single impressive thing....we were 8th in the country and everyone was loving us...but now that we're a couple games from winning the ACC title and have won 14 outta 16 (including the blown lead in cameron)...we still can't crack the top 15?...and can anyone justify unc being a lower seed than duke in the NCAA tourney if we win the acc and tournament with a stronger SOS and clearly playing much better at the end of the season....?? We will be deserving of a 2 seed....right?

wow medina! lots of duke hate in your post and the analysis/opinion stinks, just like you say. duke's bigs are definitely not their strength but they weren't last year either. mason plumlee is definitely more than serviceable as the 5th leading rebounder in the ACC and ~ 8 ppg and almost 2 blocks. clearly you didn't watch irving play because that guy is a consensus difference maker and a sure-fire top 3 NBA pick (ESPN this week said that cleveland would take him at 1). he is a difference maker because of his passing game AND ability to slash into the paint and finish. who cares who is in the post when you are a constant threat to either finish in the paint or kick it back to the one of the best perimeter cast in the nation or dump it into a plumlee for a dunk. without him duke has a tough road to repeat but is definitely in the mix with a first team all-american in Nolan Smith and a 2nd or 3rd team all-american in Singler. if duke can get irving back at 80% + then their odds only improve. as a fan i can't ask for anything more coming off a title last year.

Excuses are like assholes, everybody's got 'em and they all stink. Irving being out doesnt mean anything. That doesnt change the fact that Duke has ZERO big man talent. No inside scoring. No post threats. And plus, the most important detail, that Singler and Smith both came back for their senior years...That draft class last year was FULL of underclassmen. Most top teams lost great players EARLY. Duke lost nobody. So lets throw this potential Irving excuse out the door Dookies. Yeah, you dont have Irving. But what about Kentucky?????..Lost 5 guys to the NBA draft who were underclassmen. And like i said, Duke's bigs suck. Irving is a PG. Dont see how Irving would have grabbed boards or posted up.

And Durenzo Hudson broke his foot if I'm not mistaken.  They've had it rough, but done well despite the problems.

VT has had major injuries (JT Thompson blew out his knee, one of their guys has a heart infection) transfers (Ben Boggs (?) wasn't getting enough playing time (go figure).  So no, it's not normal... but it's what they've had to do for a while.

Is the box score from that game for real? Vtech minutes: 40, 39, 39, 38, 37??? They had 7 total bench minutes played? Is that normal for a team? I didn't watch the game, but sounds absurdly low.

I am not a UNC fan, but they will get it done this week and make next weekend start of a GREAT run of hoop. This is why we watch!!

Gary, I concur that it is nice to look ahead at what could be the ACC regular season showdown, but if the Tar Heels want to be in position to take it. They must stay focused on the next opponent, and I know Roy will make sure that happens, and if they play like they did against NCST, they will notch a Win today against Maryland.

PS Can you believe Duke laid an egg at VT! VT almost gave them the game and Duke said no thank you, we'll clank a few off the rim and miss a critical free throw....and Curry really stunk it up, he probably could not have put mustard on his hotdog at the concession stand, it would have been all down his forearm.

Way to go Hokies! I would like to see you in the dance.

I think someone is forgeting that Maryland is 4-1 in their last 5 against UNC. Not saying they'll win tonight, but this seems to be pretty much writing it off as a Carolina win.
