Report: BYU suspended Davies for premarital sex

Posted on: March 3, 2011 7:14 am

Brandon Davies was suspended from BYU's basketball team for the remainder of the season because he violated the part of the school's honor code provision that prohibits premarital sex, according to a report in The Salt Lake Tribune.

The paper reported that Davies acknowledged the violation to BYU officials Monday.

BYU announced Davies' suspension on Tuesday.

"Everyone makes mistakes in their life," said BYU's Charles Abouo. "We are reaching out and trying to help him get through this."

Davies was averaging 11.1 points and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds. The No. 3 Cougars lost 82-64 Wednesday night to New Mexico in their first game without Davies. They close the regular season Saturday against Wyoming.

Standing for something

If you commit to something, for BYU this is an honor code.  Then you should be held accountable if you break the code.  About time schools made an athlete accountable for something and not cater to them because they can help them win.  Especially one that has a chance of going far in the tournament.  Too many times schools look the other way.

This shows that they stand for something, weather you agree or disagree.

How can I be forgiven of my sins?

You can be forgiven of your sins through the Atonement of Jesus Christ by the process of . Because Heavenly Father knew we would sometimes make wrong choices, He provided a way for us to be forgiven of our sins (John 3:16). He provided a Saviour, Jesus Christ, who suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross so that when we sincerely repent, we can be forgiven (Book of Mormon, Mosiah 4:6).

When we sincerely , we:

  • Confess the sin to both God and anyone who has been harmed by our sin.
  • Ask forgiveness from God and from anyone we have harmed.
  • When possible, repair the damage we have done.
  • Forsake our sins.
  • Strive to .
Sincere repentance brings peace and forgiveness. God has promised, “Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more” (Doctrine and Covenants 58:42).

Who can really say then, if in my heart I believe I have repented what man can judge that.  Also, is the young lady a student at BYU, and what sight is she being bashed on about her fornicating life style?  Is this the only athelete in BYU history to break the code and be publicly embarassed by his mentors. Truly, it's not about Basketball or sports period, but it is about this young man public life.  And, why is the Church (Mormans) BYU treating him as the only offender in this situation.  If the preceeding statement about Heavenly Father knowing we would sometines make wrong choices; what is the need for additional codes of honor is BYU run like the boy scouts.

Report: BYU suspended Davies for premarital sex

This is one of those times that shows why not just colleges, but almost any sort of establishment with rules need updating.  I'm not saying they should let students run free and have sex whenever they want, but BYU definitely needs to lighten up just a little.  As much as they preach to these students to not have sex, they're going to do it anyways, it just sucks for Brandon Davies that he was caught, which leads me to a better point.  His biggest mistake was just getting caught.  Oh well, that's what happens when a religion rules an establishment, it isn't about fairness or anything, just whatever was written by an old guy that is completely outdated for our society.

I have trouble understanding why any black athlete would go to BYU. I lived in Utah for 3 yrs and became familiar with Mormonism. It's my understanding that the "prophet", I think it was Spencer Kimball at the time, had a "revelation" about allowing blacks into the "priesthood" sometime in the late 70's/early 80's. I was in Utah from 1980 - 1983. The talk was that the church was "expanding". Hey, the Bible says you look at a women with lust you've committed adultery in your heart...I'm just say'en. Bottom line, God loves Davies, his gf, all BYU people and you and me. I've heard some great quotes over time. One is "religion is man's attempt to get to God and Christianity is Gods attempt to get to God". I don't believe your religion will save you. Forgiveness and reconciliation should be part of BYU's code of conduct.P.S. Please don't argue that Christianity is a 'religion'.
