The Poll Attacks

Whitelaw Reid was the only voter who put Duke No. 1 last week. I ignored it because I'm kind. But now Whitelaw's done gone and went straight Whitelaw on us again, and I can't ignore him a second time. So welcome back to the Poll Attacks, Mr. Reid. It really has been too long.

(Details of AP ballots courtesy of PollSpeak.com.)

Associated Press poll: Let's make this simple and just compare two resumes blindly.

----- Team A -----

Overall record: 24-6
RPI: 6
Record against the Top 50: 6-4
Record against the Top 100: 14-5
Wins over teams ranked in the latest AP poll: 2

----- Team B -----

Overall record: 25-6
RPI: 16
Record against the Top 50: 2-4
Record against the Top 100: 8-5
Wins over teams ranked in the latest AP poll: 0

Team A is clearly more accomplished, right? Team A has a better RPI, a better record against the top 50, a better record against the top 100 and two wins over schools ranked in the latest AP poll compared to Team B's zero wins over schools ranked in the latest AP poll. Team A is North Carolina. Team B is Arizona. And their resumes aren't even close, which is why the Tar Heels are ranked sixth and the Wildcats are ranked 16th this week.

Guess who has that damn-near backwards?

Yep, Poll Attacks veteran Whitelaw Reid from The Daily Progress.

He's got Arizona ranked No. 9 and North Carolina ranked No. 15 on his ballot.

I can't make sense of it.

I bet he can't either.

Coaches poll: I doubted and discounted Cincinnati much of this season and applauded those who were with me. But at some point it's impossible to ignore the Bearcats' resume, and we reached that point over the past week when Cincinnati won at Marquette and then beat Georgetown. Yes, the win over Georgetown is a win over the Hoyas sans Chris Wright. But it's still a win that pushed the Bearcats to 24-7 and allowed them to finish sixth in a Big East conference that has seven members ranked in the latest coaches poll.

The problem?

Cincinnati isn't one of the seven.

Which is crazy considering the Bearcats have five top-25 RPI wins and zero losses outside of the top 35 of the RPI. Not to pick on Utah State, but the Aggies have zero top-25 RPI wins and a loss to Idaho (129th in the RPI), and they're ranked 17th in the coaches poll that doesn't rank UC at all. Again, that's crazy. And you'll see just how crazy next Sunday when the Bearcats get a better seed than Utah State in the NCAA tournament despite being ranked much lower in the coaches poll.

The Poll Attacks

Ok Dr Parrish- you ranked Wisconsin higher than Purdue (only you no other poll) and same argument that you used for Carolina and Arizona holds for Purdue Wisconsin.  Time to look in the mirror for your poll attacks

The Poll Attacks

These polls don't matter. It's all a matter of opinion, biased or otherwise. The beautiful thing about the college game is that the tourney is the Great Equalizer! If you think your team is being disrespected by the polls, fine. Go out and prove the voters wrong! It has been done numerous times before (14th seed Ohio over 3rd seed Georgetown  and 13th seed Murray State over 4th seed Vanderbilt last year are two recent examples).

So stop complaining! If you think yo know more than the so-called experts, PROVE IT!!!  Match your skills versus theirs and see how things pan out. If you win, enjoy the victory!! If you lose, then please shut up!

Realistic Duke Fan!!!!

The Poll Attacks

How about AP member Jerry Tipton who was the only one to vote for Alabama ... and he voted them 16th!!!  He has them ahead of 5 Big East teams, all of which would easily beat Bama on a neutral court.

Heck, at this moment, they might not even be in the tournament!

"How is team A or team B in the top 10 with 2 wins in the top 25 between them....thanks for pointing that out..."

The same argument can be said about BYU or SDST. They played each other which counts as their games against top 25 oppenents. BYU also has a victory against Arizona but after that....Yet both are also in the top fifteen. Neither has won a game or even played against Big East, Big Ten or SEC top teams.

The Poll Attacks

The Poll Attacks the Poll Attacks.
How can the Most Clueless man alive to be given a feature on a major online site not have TEAM B ranked?  While their resume may not be better than TEAM A as reflected in the AP and Coaches poll, they are surely better than most of the teams ranked 16-26 in the Most Clueless Man Alives Top 26.  And even the comparison with Team A is not that glaring.  Team B played the top teams early in the season when this particularly young team was still figuring out second year coach Sean Miller's system and has not had opportunity to play any highly rated teams on their home floor!  If they played in the Big East or other conferences with your overranked bias and had the opportunity to play overranked teams more often and esp. on their home court,, then their resume would look more similar to TEAM A and your half ass pseudoscientific approach may work.    But perhaps this is also why the 16th ranked team in the country is given a 7 seed on this excuse for a college BB website.  Here is my latest TOP 1 sports site And 1.  1) ESPN. And 1) Everyone else

It's bad enough that there are no good teams out west but their fans are so stupid.

The Poll Attacks

I have watched both UC and Utah State play this year. I think that Utah State is a nice team, but they aren't as good as you might think. UC and Utah State both Georgetown and surprisingly,Utah Valley. UC went 3-0,Utah State went 1-1. Remember,Utah State was blown out by Georgetown,UC blew out Georgetown twice.  Utah State would be a 10 seed right now because they also played a NAIA school as well. UC would be 6 or 7 seed right now. I would love to see a matchup between these two and see what happens.

The Poll Attacks

Gary, how about an auto-Poll Attack? How do you explain ranking Wisconsin ahead of Purdue when Purdue has better overall and conference records?
